    Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job. We're recruiting for summer engineering students to help our province achieve big things

    At the Department of Public Works, we manage 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services throughout the province.

    About Our Opportunity

    This position is responsible for the landscaping and lawn maintenance of the outdoor grounds of the Perennia Park Complex. You will be working closely with the full time Maintenance Worker. Your main duties include planting greenery, cutting and maintaining the healthy growth of plants and grass, and keeping the grounds clean and well-manicured.

    Primary Accountabilities

    You will assist the Team in a wide range of duties and have the opportunity to:

    • Pruning shrubs, trimming bushes, and adding fertilizer to maintain growth
    • Cutting and Trimming grass regularly
    • Watering plants and lawn as needed
    • Using and maintaining landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, clippers, and blowers, among others.

    Qualifications and Experience

    You are a horticulture student or a similar program would be preferred. You must be returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

    You must also be:

    • Groundskeeper or similar role
    • Familiarity with sprinkler systems and other landscaping equipment
    • Knowledge of gardening techniques
    • Knowledge of gardening products such as fertilizers and pesticides
    • Be able to lift 50lb
    • Physical stamina and the ability to stand/work for long periods in hot weather conditions.
    • Organized and able to prioritize your work; and
    • An excellent communicator who provides professional customer service.

    The following are considered assets including:

    • Exposure to heavy equipment; and
    • Training in First Aid, Traffic Control Person, or Temporary Workplace Signer.

    We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

    Working Conditions

    Majority of your work is outdoors in various weather conditions, with considerable travel throughout your assigned area.

    This opportunity will start approximately May 1, 2024 with an end date of August 30, 2024.

    There is one (1) position available in Bible Hill.

    Pay Grade: HOURLY

    Salary Range: $ $28.26 Hourly
