Position Summary


The Educational Interpreter (EI) provides interpreting support to students who are Deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) in the classroom.

They also provide interpreting services for the classroom teacher, Education Support Teacher (EST) -DHH, and school support staff.


This individual is responsible for providing a culturally and linguistically equivalent message in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English for all classroom participants.

They support the Deaf or hard of hearing student while they navigate a hearing learning environment by acting as a cultural mediator while acknowledging the differences between the unique cultures of home and classroom.


The EI is a member of the educational team and works collaboratively with the classroom teacher, Supervisor of Educational Interpreting Services, EST -DHH, ASL Specialists, and Deaf Mentors.

The EI reports to the Supervisor of Educational Interpreting Services.

Education & Qualifications

  • Graduate of an Interpreter Training Program at a college or postsecondary level is required.
  • A postsecondary degree in any field is preferred university or college studies in Deaf education, child development or special education would be an asset.
  • Professional certification from: CASLI, The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Canadian Government's Translation Bureau and/or other interpreter screenings are desirable.
  • Ability to obtain a minimum of 3.5 on the first and fourth categories of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
  • Knowledge of child and language development.
  • Knowledgeable of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of an educational team.
  • Fluency in English (written, spoken & sign), and ASL (American Sign Language).
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills in working with students and colleagues; experience in working or interacting with Deaf and/or hard of hearing persons.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of interpreting in the community, postsecondary, or video relay services environment(s).
  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Experience with crosscultural communication.
  • Minimum of two (2) year's experience as an interpreter in an educational setting is an asset.
  • Early Childhood Education is an asset.
  • Comfortable working in a virtual learning environment.

Offer of employment is conditional upon the successful completion of all applicable background checks and confirmation of credentials.
