    Job Summary


    Nika Shakiba lab, at the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science and Medicine, at the University of British Columbia, is looking to hire a research assistant/technician 2 to join its team.

    Organizational Status
    The Research Assistant will report directly to the study managers, Nika Shakiba and Nico Werschler. Contract is for 6 months and is renewable pending on performance and funding.

    Work Performed

    • Carries out simple experiments to develop new and effective treatments for various diseases by uncovering the fundamental biological principles underlying development and disease.

    • Assists with lab ordering and receiving.

    • Assists lab members with experiments: genotyping, Western blotting, RNA isolation, etc.

    • Assists with media and buffers preparations.

    • Maintains research-related records and databases, entering data according to established protocols.

    • Maintains animal protocols up to date with changes and assists lab members with new submissions and amendments.

    • Cleans and performs basic maintenance of equipment and apparatus.

    • Performs preparation of materials according to test specifications.

    • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

    Consequence of Error/Judgement
    Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication will result in delays and lower research output quality, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding of the research group and UBC.

    Works under direct supervision following detailed oral or written instructions; routine duties are carried out under general supervision.

    Minimum Qualifications
    High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Prior experience with maintaining day-to-day operations in the lab preferred.
    • High degree of motivation, enthusiasm, curiosity, organization, and initiative.
    • Ability to work independently and with other lab personnel.
    • Effective oral and written communication.
