Summary

The Protection & Control Designer is responsible for the design of high-voltage substation projects in a fast-paced environment. They will be responsible for the accuracy, quality and constructability of designs, calculations and estimates for utility projects of all sizes. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required by the Protection and controlDesigner to progress designs through all project stages. The protection and control designer contributes to substation bid proposals, estimates and material calculations and is responsible for the accuracy of quoted work. The Protection & Control Designer is responsible for the handover of high-quality design packages to the customer or project team, on schedule, and is responsible for resolving design-related issues and field-level questions while projects are underway. The Protection & Control Designer needs to work closely with project management to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time.

Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree or Diploma in Electrical engineering.
• Registration as a P.Eng. or PL.Eng. is considered an asset.
• 2-4 years of experience working in a Protection and control/SCADA engineering environment, with extensive experience in design and cost estimating of substation projects, commercial projects, or industrial projects.

• Ability to create and review engineering drawings and design information according to established standards and procedures.
• Capable of developing estimates based on drawings and scopes of work.
• Subject matter expert in design and construction including applicable electrical codes, standards and specifications.
• Ability to read and comprehend electrical and construction plans from, customers and consultants.
• Superior ability to meet tight deadlines and multi-task.
• Able to develop project schedules based on proposal details.
• Capacity to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
• Ability to build relationships with clients, consultants, approval authorities and utility representatives.

• Ability to maintain customer relationships while identifying, supporting and establishing new opportunities and business lines.
• Experience with estimating, design, and project-related software such as Bluebeam, MicroStation, and AutoCAD, would be considered an asset.

Duties

Estimating, Design and Project Management

• Prepare quotations and proposals using standard templates, Microsoft Office software.
• Prepare accurate estimates of costs of materials, labour, and equipment for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings, and specifications.
• As required, compile project BOM's based on drawings, specifications, codes and standards to be submitted to procurement for purchasing.
• Analyze customer plans and utility documentation in order to develop substation project proposals, preliminary designs and schedules.
• Utilize AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam or other design software to prepare designs from the conceptual stage through to project completion.
• Submission of design packages for approval.
• Obtain all necessary permits, agreements and design approvals required for project execution including line assignments, crossing and proximity agreements, environmental approvals, utility design approvals as well as project-related client contractual and financial related documents.
• Collaborate with design consultants and utilities. Facilitate or attend various external site and project-related meetings.
• Facilitate or attend all internal project meetings such as project handoff, kick-offs, and reviews.
• Monitor project budget, costs, and scope. Follow change control processes and issue change orders as required.
• Collaborate with Project Management to prevent issues and ensure that design-related issues are prioritized and resolved quickly to maintain schedules and prevent work stoppages or downtime for construction crews.

• This position is a mix of office and fieldwork. A small portion of this position's time will require fieldwork.
