    About the role

    Hybrid | Full-time | Mid Level

    The XRD Mineralogist plays a critical role in providing high quality analytical services and technical expertise to ALS clients. In this position, you will be responsible for all aspects of X-Ray Diffraction mineralogical analysis including sample preparation, instrument operation, data analysis and providing mineral compositions via interpretation of X-Ray diffraction patterns.

    Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare mineral samples for analysis, including milling, mounting, and loading onto sample holders;
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain XRD equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results;
  • Perform X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses on mineral samples following standard operating procedures;
  • Troubleshoot instrument issues and optimize analysis parameters to improve efficiency and data quality;
  • Interpret XRD patterns to identify mineral phases and quantify mineral compositions using specialized software for peak identification, phase quantification and crystalline structure determination;
  • Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing XRD results, including mineral identification, quantitative analysis, and interpretation of mineralogical characteristics;
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with ALS requirements;
  • Collaborate internally with other ALS divisions on best practices and method standardization;
  • Develop and optimize methodologies and procedures for continuous improvement;
  • Liaise with external and internal clients to understand their analytical needs and provide expert advice on sample preparation and analysis techniques;
  • Provide technical expertise in XRD analysis to internal teams and clients;
  • Stay current in XRD technology, methodologies and industry trends;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuing analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedutes;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • About you:

  • Strong understanding of mineralogy and XRD theory and principles;
  • Proven experience in operating XRD instrumentation, preferably in a commercial laboratory environment;
  • Proficiency in interpreting XRD patterns and quantifying mineral compositions;
  • Experience with XRD analysis software such as Eva and Topas, JADE, PDF-4 mineral database etc;
  • Strong, collaborative team orientation as well as the ability to respond flexibly to changing demands;
  • Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Strong customer service focus, interpersonal and organizational abilities;
  • Demonstrated initiative and judgement to ensure projects are completed on time under minimal supervision;
  • Strong attention to detail and problem solving skills;
  • Focused on quality and continuous improvement, striving to improve processes and/or develop new methods.
  • Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Mineralogy, Earth and Ocean Science or related field;
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in mineralogy or mineral exploration, preferably in a commercial laboratory environment;
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in XRD operation and data interpretation.

  • Annual salary ranging from $85,000 - $115,000
