The Opportunity:


The Consultant, Nursing Professional Practice acts as a centre wide resource on nursing professional practice issues and provides a nursing professional practice perspective on appropriate standing committees and ad hoc working groups.

They assist nurses and other clinical team members from across IWK Health to understand scopes of practice for nurse practitioners, registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs), RN and LPN collaborative practice, RN prescribers, as well as the optimization of these nursing roles.

They display innovation and creativity in the performance of the role by utilizing a variety of strategies and resources to support individual/team needs.

They support peers and colleagues to identify areas where patient care can be enhanced through appropriate changes to nursing scope of practice (entry level competencies, care directives and additions of interventions to scope of nursing).


The Consultant, Nursing Professional Practice provides consultation and leadership to the resolution of unit specific and centre wide nursing professional practice issues and builds capacity in others to also lead resolution.

The Consultant, Nursing Professional Practice provides leadership in collaborating with clinical teams related to the planning, coordination, and implementation of identified centre wide projects and initiatives, as appropriate.

The Consultant, Nursing Professional Practice promotes and maintains strong and effective interpersonal and interprofessional relationships; communicates effectively, garners collaboration and works consultatively with all levels within the organization.

The Consultant models resolving conflict in a respectful and professional manner.

The Consultant also serves as a centre wide resource related to acceptable documentation practices and provides support in the development of documentation tools for approval within the organization.


With the expansion of recruitment and retention strategies for nursing at IWK Health, the Consultant, Nursing Professional Practice will lead and support a variety of nursing enhancement initiatives.

They will work closely with administration and direct care nurses to strengthen the nursing voice and bring forth the nursing perspective at critical tables and advise on opportunities for professional development and job satisfaction of nurses.


Hours of Work:

Monday - Friday, 8 hours/day


Your Qualifications:


  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required.
  • Masters degree required. Masters degree in progress will be considered, or commitment to commence Masters within 2 years
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing required
  • Current membership with the Canadian Nurses Association
  • Minimum of five (5) years clinical nursing experience required
  • Current successful completion of CPR-Level C Healthcare Provider within the last 12 months required.
  • Previous experience engaging, leading and managing project work groups required; working respectfully and collaboratively to build consensus
  • Demonstrates understanding of the provincial legislation that regulates nursing practice in Nova Scotia and the Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice that guide and support nursing practice.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the definitions, policies, and approval for optimizing the nursing scope of practice (care directives and beyond entry level competencies (BELC's) and applies knowledge in different practice settings.
  • A developing awareness of transformational leadership, IWK Nursing Strategy and High Reliability Organization principles
  • Demonstrates ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with groups and individuals
  • Ability to resolve conflict constructively and respectfull
