Nshwaasnangong is a place for Indigenous young children and families to honour, rekindle, and express their identities as Indigenous Peoples; where kindness and compassion helps everyone to have a sense of belonging; where we nurture our well-being, while living in sync with community and all creation, where we engage deeply with questions and possibilities.


Our centre offers licensed childcare and a nurturing environment for up to 88 children, ages 0-6, to learn, develop, and connect with their Indigenous culture.

Our Child Care Centre is adjoined with our Family Centre that provides a place for young children, families, and youth to participate in ceremonies, land-based learning, knowledge exchange and connect with community supports.


Position Summary


Reporting to the Nshwaasnangong Centre Manager, the
Behaviour Support Specialist provides resources, training, and assistant to child care providers to effectively identify, address and prevent challenging behaviours in young children as a result of enhanced physical, cognitive or behavioural needs.


Responsibilities

  • Leads child care team in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of children's Individual Support Plans.
  • Provide assistance in child care settings to mentor and assist educators in promoting healthy socialemotional development.
  • Providing individualized and/or crisis supports to children diagnosed or touched by autism, Developmental Disability, Mental Health issues, FASD, etc
  • Cultivate partnerships with other behavioral specialists, consultants, educators and mental health professionals to assist child care providers/families in promoting positive behaviors in young children.
  • Collects and documents data, related reports, and child records for the purpose of ongoing behavior intervention service planning and review.
  • Provides assistance with deescalating student behaviors and reintegration back into the classroom.
  • Leads childcare team to review curriculum, share ideas, assess curriculum and support a positive atmosphere of teamwork
  • Assist with documentation to support the effective monitoring of the child's progress and individual support plan
  • Keeps uptodate on relevant information as it concerns early childhood education and maintains any required registrations with professional regulatory bodies
  • Role models behaviour management strategies for coworkers and promotes discussion and problem solving within the team to best meet the needs of the children identified as requiring enhanced support.
  • Assists children with personal and medical care which may include feeding, dressing, toileting, hygiene, lifting and positioning and assistance with mobility.
  • Works with families to ensure family's specific needs are met and plans for successful outcomes.

Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree or postsecondary diploma plus experience in one or several of the following fields: Early Childhood Education, Applied Behavioural Analysis, Social Work, Child & Youth, Developmental Service, Behavioral Support, Special Education, Child Psychology
  • Training in Nonviolent Crisis Prevention/Intervention Training (CPI) an asset
  • At least 3 years' experience working with children with physical, cognitive or behavioural needs, especially in a childcare setting
  • Knowledge of the Indigenous histories, cultures, values, creation stories, and language of the Indigenous population in the London area
  • Training and experience in a field that relates to the needs of children with Special Needs or differing abilities/diagnoses
  • Able to meet the legislative requirements for working in a licensed child care setting
  • Knowledge of theories and practices applicable to the children's mental health field and special education
  • Demonstrates a commitment to working in an inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to diverse needs and challenges
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to interact and collaborate with staff, students and families in a professional manner
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work effectively as a team and independently
  • Knowledge and course verification of student deescalation and safe methods of physical interventions during crisis
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours
