Financial services includes the delivery of financially planning, financial reporting, and financial operations in each ministry across the Government of Alberta.

This specific competition will be used to fill a variety of financial reporting and operations positions at the Finance 2 classification level across the Government of Alberta.

Today, we have exciting opportunities in the following areas:

Financial Reporting

You will play an integral role in producing multiple financial reports in accordance with government policies, processes, guidelines, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Some activities include the preparation of the ministry's quarterly financial information, various public disclosures, year-end financial reporting, and addressing the ministry's financial audit requirements.

You will use your passion, knowledge and experience to assist in providing financial reporting services, such as financial information preparation for the Annual Report, quarterly actual results, and ad hoc management reporting.


Financial Operations
You will play an integral role in the comprehensive management of the ministry's financial operations. This includes developing and implementing ministry-wide financial policies and procedures, internal controls, and reviewing the day-to-day financial operations.

You will maintain the integrity of financial data within the following functions:
Grants and Contracts, Travel & Expense Claims, P-Card, Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR) and General Ledger.


These positions offer an excellent opportunity for you to develop your expertise in a variety of financial processes while working with a team of innovative and client focused professionals.

Typical duties at this level include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Providing financial advice and guidance to clients to ensure compliance with financial regulations and policies
  • Reviewing client financial processes and procedures such as accounts payable, procurement card, grants, contracts and expense claims to ensure they are in accordance with changes to legislation
  • Conducting detailed analysis and interpretation of financial data
  • Explaining financial information, processes, and programs to clients
  • Discussing complex financial issues with clients and making recommendations regarding possible solutions
  • Participating in committees within the ministry and across government

Qualifications:

University graduation in Business, Finance, Accounting, Commerce or Management or other related field plus one-year related experience.


Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of a minimum a 2-year related diploma plus three years directly related experience.


The following would be considered requirements:

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Use of accounting and/or other software to support data manipulation and reporting (i.e. SAP, Oracle)
  • Experience supporting the preparation or review of financial statements and working papers (i.e. reconciliation of general ledger, bank reconciliation)

The following would be considered assets:

  • An accounting designation
  • Knowledge of the Government of Alberta's applicable legislation (e.g., Financial Administration Act, Fiscal Planning and Transparency Act, Government Organizational Act, and Alberta Public Agencies Act)
  • Knowledge of Public Sector accounting Standards (PSAS)
