SCOPE OF POSITION:

Provide support, resources, supervision, and motivation to cabin leaders, as well as helping with disciplinary concerns for campers. Guide cabin groups of 8-10 campers through successful participation in all aspects of the residential camp program if required.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
• Must have a valid Drivers License.
• 3 seasons of summer camp experience or 1 year in equivalent work required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Desire to work with youth.
• Ability to supervise and provide guidance to staff and campers.
• Ability to diffuse stressful situations with staff and campers.
• Be a Christian with a strong, demonstrative commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is enthusiastic, energetic, and creative in spiritual leadership.
• Possess leadership skills, with the ability to supervise, care for, and provide necessary guidance for campers 24 hours a day.
• Possess leadership skills with the ability to plan, organize, and execute special programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead and direct cabin leaders regarding assigned campers and activities, as well as teaching them skills to respond to specific needs or problems regarding campers.
• Provide supervision, support, and motivation to cabin leaders.
• Lead a weekly devotion with cabin leaders following a present curriculum or applicable topics.
• Help cabin leaders maintain safety and discipline with difficult campers.
• Coordinate with Creative Coordinator and potentially other leadership team members to determine if a child needs to be sent home.
• Coordinate with the Creative Coordinator, Nurse, and leadership team for possible medical transportation as needed. May be asked to drive or accompany hospital transport of campers or staff.
• Provide consistent and active supervision, promote group unity, and know about camper's needs.
• If required, guide, direct, and monitor an assigned cabin of campers during scheduled daily camp activities and programs, such as cabin clean up, mealtimes, evening activities, transitional times, and overnight.
• Supervise, actively engage, and lead campers during assigned program time when on-duty.
• Respond to and provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems, or concerns among campers.
• Turn in all camper-related forms in a timely manner, such as seeker forms, incident forms, safety reports, and Notice of Concern's.
• Set a good example for campers and others including language, cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, and table manners.

General Duties:

• Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to, and with campers.
• Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
• Enforce adherence to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
• Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
• Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g., chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
• Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of cabins and outside areas.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Creative Coordinator.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike, and twist on a continuous basis for up to 15-20 minutes at a time.
• Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, such as files, file cabinets drawers, and reach overhead.
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
• Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused, or frustrated.
• May be required to work in all areas of camp which may include the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility, and grounds, etc.
• Working in a distinctively Christian environment.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
• Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
• Work around dust, odor, high noise levels, and bodily fluids.

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check.

They must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
