Job Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Automation Specialist to drive efficiency and technological advancement within our manufacturing operations. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automated systems that enhance production processes. Your expertise in robotics, control systems, and mechanical integration will be essential to optimize workflows, improve quality, and ensure compliance with industry standards such as CGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice). This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of manufacturing automation, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to transform traditional processes into streamlined, high-performance operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program, troubleshoot, and support PLC systems (Allen-Bradley / Siemens).
  • Support robotic systems (ABB preferred) and automated equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve controls-related production issues.
  • Support HMI / SCADA systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and control drawings.
  • Assist with control panel design, commissioning, and system upgrades.
  • Support continuous improvement and automation projects.
  • Work closely with maintenance, engineering, and production teams.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and electrical standards.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field is strongly preferred. Alternatively, a college diploma in electrical engineering technology combined with significant relevant industry experience will also be considered.
  • Must have a strong working knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical and electrical design software
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation preferred or working towards certification
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical codes (CSA, NEC, IEC) and industrial electrical standards
  • Experience with industrial electrical components including PLCs, VFDs, motor controls, and safety systems
  • Knowledge of power systems, electrical distribution, and motor control circuits
  • Experience with electrical testing equipment and commissioning procedures
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety standards and risk assessment
  • Willingness to travel
  • Design comprehensive electrical systems including power distribution, motor controls, safety circuits, and instrumentation for complex automation systems
  • Form strong relationships with customer representatives, understanding their electrical infrastructure requirements and offering expert electrical engineering insights (all documented, of course)
  • Bring your electrical designs to life, conducting thorough testing and validation in our shop or at the customer's location
  • Lead electrical system integration, ensuring seamless power distribution and electrical compatibility across all automation technologies
  • Wield the power of AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electrical to create comprehensive electrical blueprints, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams
  • Be the technical leader for our procurement team by creating detailed electrical BOMs with precise specifications and ratings
  • Perform comprehensive factory inspections on electrical control panels to ensure they meet all electrical codes and standards
  • Provide technical leadership to ensure electrical hardware meets all safety and performance requirements
  • Coordinate and oversee electrical installation activities at customer locations
  • Conduct electrical Power Up testing and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) including insulation resistance, continuity, and load testing
  • Perform or supervise electrical commissioning and Site Acceptance Testing to validate electrical system performance and safety
  • Design and specify electrical safety systems and ensure compliance with CSA, UL, and international electrical standards
  • Review and modify electrical designs to eliminate safety issues and improve system reliability
  • Craft detailed electrical engineering reports and technical communications for management and customers
  • Provide electrical technical leadership, ensuring our systems meet electrical codes and operate reliably
  • Be a strong proponent of electrical safety standards and lead safety design reviews
  • Mentor junior electrical engineers and technicians

Qualifications

  • Hands-on PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens PLCs.
  • Manufacturing or industrial plant experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Industrial Electrician License (442A or 309A) – strong asset.
  • Experience with robotics (ABB preferred; Fanuc/Motoman an asset).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Proven experience with Fanuc robots, robotics programming, and automation system integration.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge including schematics reading, blueprint interpretation, tooling design, and machining techniques.
  • Proficiency in programming PLCs and DCS for complex manufacturing applications.
  • Familiarity with vision inspection systems and their application in quality control processes.
  • Skilled in AutoCAD and SolidWorks for designing automation components and layouts.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis on automation issues efficiently.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $60,000.00-$70,000.00 per year
