Position Summary

The Operations Manager / Assistant Chief Flight Instructor ( ACFI ) is responsible for a variety of administrative functions including assisting the Chief Flight Instructor ( CFI ) with the overall management of the Flight Training Unit ( FTU ) and is responsible for directing and coordinating the operations of the College's Approved Maintenance Organization ( AMO ).

The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that flight training operations are being conducted safely, efficiently and are upheld to appropriate standards.


Position duties include:

Oversee day to day operations of flight, simulator and ground training.

Provide oversight and direction of scheduling for duty instructors, flight instructors and students.

Assignment of students to flight instructors.

Monitoring and managing student progress through the training syllabus.

Ensure adequate duty instructor coverage.

Oversee apron and facility maintenance and upkeep, and address concerns and issues that arise.

Manage aircraft, simulators, equipment, software, hardware, and associated equipment updates used in FTU.

Manage student occurrence reporting system.

Arrange for Transport Canada Flight tests for students and verify the accuracy of documentation.


ensure that Transport Canada regulatory and licensing training publications, charts and maps and standard publication are available to trainees and amended to date.


Ensure that the work environment is operating in a safe manner and that established policies and procedures are being followed.

Provide regular departmental communication.

Manage day to day operations of the Approved Maintenance Organization.

Liaise and coordinate with Person Responsible for Maintenance ( PRM ) regarding all aircraft maintenance requirements and scheduling.

Ensure safety of work environment and promote safe working practices

Supervision of all AMO and Operations Support personnel.

Assist with professional development and training for instructors to maintain or upgrade their qualifications.

Conduct performance reviews with AMO and Operations Support staff.

Manage vacation and leave requests of AMO and Operations Support staff.

Manage attendance and related maters of AMO and Operations Support staff.

Planning, organizing and directing departmental activities.

Assist with the development of operating budget and specific goals and objectives.

Assist with the review and revision of operating policies and procedures.

Ensure that Transport Canada regulations and company policies and procedures are properly adhered to.

Assist with review and adjustment of staffing levels to ensure adequate capacity to meet the program objectives.

Oversee the tracking and dissemination of operations related data.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum level of formal education required for the position
3 year diploma/degree plus professional certification or equivalent

Specific course(s), certification, qualification, formal training or accreditation required for the position

Transport Canada Commercial Pilot License, Class 1 or 2 Flight Instructor Rating and Multi-Engine Instrument Flight Rating

3 year diploma/degree in aviation, business management, or similar.

Minimum of five (5) years

Type of Experience
Class 1 or 2 Flight Instructor with a minimum of 5 years work experience as a flight instructor.
