General Description:

Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for
One (1) Strengthening Fathers Case Manager. The Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Center is a charitable non-profit organization which provides over 45 culturally grounded programs.

Strengthening Fathers Program provides support for indigenous fathers experiencing complex social, emotional and familial challenges.

With the support of the Friendship Centre team, Strengthening Fathers Case Manager will work collaboratively with fathers to build meaningful helping relationships while collectively identifying strengths, resources, challenges, and priorities using a holistic and culture-based framework.

Key Responsibilities:

Work collaboratively with fathers and their families by providing support to access services
Maintain a high level of confidentiality
Ensure the program delivery is congruent with the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre's mission, vision and philosophy
Work with target age group: Indigenous fathers with children years old (up to the 19th birthday) experiencing multiple risk factors including, but not limited to poverty, ability, lone parenting, social isolation, unstable housing / homelessness, family violence, substance misuse, emotional / mental health issues, and generational trauma
Support will be provided in the areas of child/youth growth and development, fatherchild relationships, parenting knowledge and skills, family life management, and community connections/referrals.
Must demonstrate sensitivity, compassion, and a nonjudgemental attitude, as well as initiative, selfdirection and teamwork.
Ensure community are informed and well connected to the many existing programs of the Friendship Centre and will work to identify existing resources outside of the Centre.
Attend workshops and events hosted by the Strengthening Fathers Program
Must show an understanding of and appreciation for how the determinants of health impact families in the community and have knowledge in Indigenous culture and traditions.
Prepare reports for the Executive Director
Attend professional development opportunities as requested

Qualifications:

Education in Early Childhood Development, Family Studies, Human Services, Psychology, and/or Sociologyor other relevant experience is an asset
Understanding of Indigenous Culture and the Urban Indigenous Community
Knowledge of a range of community resources relevant to families and the ability to connect families with these resources.
Ability and skills necessary to communicate respectfully with families with diverse Indigenous backgrounds such as: First Nations, Inuit and Metis.
Good oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to establish and maintain personal/program boundaries, while providing supportive services.
CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Valid Nova Scotia driver's License and ownership of a reliable, insured vehicle is required.
Satisfactory criminal record, vulnerable sector and child abuse registry checks.
Ability to work independently and within a team environment
