CARETAKER, HEAVY DUTY I

Casual (as needed)


The Alberta Teachers' Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes and advances public education, safeguards standards of professional practice and serves as the advocate for its members.


The Heavy Duty Caretaker assists in the maintenance of a clean and safe work environment and works collaboratively with afternoon building staff.

Reporting to the Building Supervisor and working directly under the Chargehand, this position performs maintenance and grounds keeping duties, assists with building safety and security and completes other duties as assigned.


Specifically, this position is responsible for:

  • Cleaning and maintaining Barnett House and surrounding grounds including snow removal with shovels;
  • Performing general cleaning duties such as mopping, vacuuming, stripping, scrubbing, waxing, carpet care, emptying garbage cans and recycle bins, disinfecting and restocking washrooms and meeting rooms, and cleaning windows, furniture and windowsills;
  • Moving heavy furniture, equipment and supplies;
  • Monitors access to restricted areas and ensures they are kept clean, safe and accessible.
  • Assisting with building safety and security including locking doors and entrances and setting building alarms at appropriate times;
  • Reporting and recording safety concerns and emergencies; and
  • Locking doors and entrances at appropriate times as assigned.

Qualifications:


  • Minimum one year of related experience and a thorough knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • The ability to work with mínimal supervision;
  • A strong customer service focus including good communication skills;
  • Problem solving, organizational and time management skills;
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in safety sensitive and/or emergency situations;
  • Completion of WHMIS;
  • Demonstrated commitment to a safe work environment including the ability to follow safe work practices;
  • Good motor coordination and manual dexterity is required;
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, push, pull and reach, up to and including above shoulder height; and
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 kilograms and push up to 50 kilograms

Salary:
$23.32 per hour


Hours of Work:

There are no guaranteed hours per week. The casual position may be called to work any day from 4:00pm to 11:30pm, Monday to Friday.

As a casual position, days of work vary depending on business operations.
