Description

Due to the well-earned retirement of the incumbent, the Stratford Perth Museum seeks a passionate, innovative, history-loving business leader for the position of General Manager.

Reporting directly to the volunteer Board of Directors, and working in conjunction with a small staff team, the General Manager oversees the operational management of the Museum and its seven-acre site, financial performance and budgeting, exhibit and public education programming, donor and strategic alliance relations, special events planning, and programming details related to the Museum's indoor and spectacular outdoor performance spaces.


The Stratford Perth Museum enjoys significant brand equity within the region and beyond, and plays an important role in the destination tourism strategies that have positioned Stratford/Perth as one of Ontario's most popular getaways.

Key Accountabilities:


1)
GENERAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT (50%)
(i)
Board of Directors and Volunteer Support

  • Provides primary staff support to the volunteer Board of Directors, assisting in strategic visioning, issues identification and the development of policy to ensure SPM conformity with all categories of the Ontario Government's standards for the Community Museums in Ontario Grant (CMOG)
  • Provides regular written and oral reports to the Board and its Executive Committee
  • Organizes, documents and implements policies, standards and plans, as approved and directed by the Board of Directors, ensuring development and documentation of all appropriate procedures
  • In conjunction with the Board Chair, coordinates orientation, policy and governance review for new Board members
  • Provides support and information to Board subcommittees, as requested and appropriate
  • Works closely with Board members and the subcommittees, as appropriate, in the recruitment, training, evaluation and assignment process for volunteers
(ii)
Membership and Donor Support

  • Ensures and manages an ongoing program of membership acquisition and renewal, including membership tracking, renewal notification and fulfillment of membership benefits.
  • Ensures a reliable, sound system to record, track and receipt all donations, in accordance with CRA requirements
  • In conjunction with the Board and key volunteers, stewards all donations and ensures fulfillment, followup related to designated gifts, and appropriate donor recognition
  • Plays a lead role and provides staff leadership to a range of fundraising activities undertaken by the volunteer base
(iii)
General Administration

  • Hires, motivates, trains and evaluates all SPM staff, including the supervision of work plans and schedules, and the addressing of any staff issues or concerns, and the recruitment of temps, coops and interns
  • Procures goods and services, ensuring adherence to all vendor selection policies
  • Researches, writes and stewards grant proposals, either personally or through delegation to staff
  • In conjunction with staff, prepares and directs plans for visitor activities, interpretation and education
  • Ultimate accountability for conformity to all aspects of Ontario's occupational health and safety regulations (OHSA; WHMIS; etc.)
  • Works with the SPM contract custodian and appropriate volunteers to identify and address physical plant issues related to the Museum building and grounds, including the general oversight of new construction projects and key maintenance
  • Liaises and negotiates with County Archives on joint physical plant or grounds maintenance issues affecting either or both properties, as required
  • In conjunction with the Manager, Education and Public Programs, provides direction and oversight to the event management and booking process related to the Museum's outdoor Player's Backstage Theatre, the indoor Co-Operators Performance Space, and The HydeAway

2)
CURATORIAL AND COLLECTION MANAGEMENT (25%)

  • Working closely with the Manager, Collections and Exhibits, has ultimate accountability for key aspects of the SPM's collection management process: a) artifact acquisition in accordance with the SPM's mandate and statement of purpose; b) cataloguing, accessioning, and preservation strategy in accordance with CMOG; c) deaccessioning and disposal strategy in accordance with CMOG and Board established policy
  • Working closely with both direct report Managers, has ultimate accountability for the planning, development, execution and performance monitoring of all public exhibits, displays and educational programs, including delivery of an annual Exhibit Strategy for Board review

COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH (25%)

  • Working closely with appropriate Board subcommittees (e.g. Executive Committee
