Part Time Custodian/maintenance Worker - Kitchener, Canada - The Salvation Army
Description
The Custodian/Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing janitorial duties that ensure The Salvation Army Kitchener Community Church and Family Care Centre is maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works independently or cooperatively with team members to complete tasks on schedule and according to quality standards.
- Cleans, sanitizes, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes, vacuums, polishes, and waxes floors.
- Cleans windows, mirrors, woodwork, furniture, equipment, and other surfaces.
- Cleans offices, kitchen, washrooms, and all other rooms.
- Responsible for tracking and record keeping of fridge/freezer temps, fire extinguishers, etc.
- Restock supplies of toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other hygiene items.
- Empties trash bins and disposes of trash, recycling, and compost in the bins and works with the supervisors to arrange the disposal of items that do not fit.
- Cleans, sterilizes and/or disinfects all areas.
- Cleans, sterilizes and/or disinfects equipment before and after each use.
- Spot wash accessible walls and spot clean carpets and perform general carpet cleaning, as required.
- Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
- Performs more extensive cleaning, carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, and light maintenance during nonpeak programming periods.
- Organizes and maintains janitorial supplies in janitorial room(s) and on janitorial carts.
- Follows established procedures and recordkeeping for inventory tracking.
- Perform general repairs that do not require certification, such as patching, painting, plumbing, replacing light bulbs etc. Reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor or designate.
- Lifts and moves furniture as requested (Chairs, tables, etc. ).
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up, upkeep of storage shed, watering of plants, etc.
- Changing the outdoor sign when needed.
- Support with set up and tear down for programming/rentals.
- Complies with all prescribed sanitation and building disinfecting protocols.
- Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e. mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and order/purchases as required.
Health & Safety and Safe Operations
- Contribute to the safety of staff, guests, customers, and clients (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the building, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up etc.)
- Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
- Monitor and maintain SDS's, ensuring all SDS's are WHMIS compliant.
- Performs monthly workplace health & safety inspections.
- Oversees Fire Safety for the facility fire drills, fire safety book, fire panel.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent parttime position at 15 hours per week.
- Schedule may vary from week to week and include both weekdays and weekends.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required.
- The incumbent's work environment is typically in the entire facility and property designated.
- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
- The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
- The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using nonmotorized/general cleaning equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completed High School.
- Uptodate CPR/First Aid certification.
- Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- A minimum of three (3) months prior related experience, including general familiarity with professional cleaning and maintenance procedures.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to Management.
- Participate in regular direct supervision with immediate supervisor and comply by attending to noted areas needing improvement to ensure maximum job performance.
- Always represent The Salvation Army in a professional manner.
- Be punctual and work all hours scheduled, advising immediate supervisor anytime this is not possible.
