City Experiences is seeking a Captain for our Niagara City Cruises operation in Niagara Falls.

About the Opportunity:


The
Captain operates Transport Canada inspected passenger vessels in the Niagara Gorge in a manner that ensures the safety and security of the crew and passengers, enjoyment of the passengers, and respect for the environment.

A flexible schedule is a must. Schedule includes evenings, weekends and holidays.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • As the Master in command of the vessel, operate the vessel with due regard for the Niagara City Cruises (NCC) Safety Management System (SMS) and ISO Respect Management System, the Vessel Security Plan, proper Standards of Watchkeeping and in accordance with the practice of good seamanship
  • Work with crew members in all areas of Marine Transportation Safety, Security, Training, and efficient operation of the vessel
  • Routinely inspect all areas of the vessel for unsafe conditions, assist in accident investigations and reports, and make safety announcements to ensure the safety and comfort of the crew and passengers
  • Conduct training talks and emergency drills in accordance with Transport Canada regulations, the Safety Management System, the Respect Management System, and Vessel Security Plan and conduct safety meetings in conformance with NCC policy, to ensure an efficient and safe operation of the vessel at all times and the proper use of equipment during any possible onboard emergency. Is accountable for the documentation and reporting of such training, drills, and meetings as set forth by company standards
  • Maintain vessel operations and maintenance logs, paying particular attention to proper recording of incidents and irregularities.
  • Ensures a clean workplace throughout the day, at the beginning and end of shifts
  • Ensure the Mates are working safely and efficiently and provide regular feedback regarding Mate performance to the Manager, Marine Operations
  • Ensure the Deckhands are working safely and efficiently and provide regular feedback regarding Deckhand performance to the Manager, Dock Operations
  • Fulfill role of Crew with Engineering Responsibilities on board with all relevant knowledge and responsibilities
  • Report nonconformities to the Designated Person (Manager, Marine Operations)
  • Ensure the safe operation of the vessel at all times using all available means
  • Shall not operate a vessel unless it is staffed with a crew that is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel and ensure the vessel meets at a minimum the standards set out in the vessel's Safe Manning Document
  • Shall not operate the vessel if any critical systems as laid out in the Safety Management System are not functioning or if in the Captain's professional evaluation conditions are unsafe for operation
  • Ensure Safety Equipment listed on The Record of Safety Equipment is present and equipment is inspected to the standards laid out in the Canada Shipping Act
  • Know, understand and implement the Operational Procedures as laid out in the Safety Management System
  • Know, understand and implement the Emergency Procedures laid out in the Safety Management System
  • Support Safety Services, Facilities, F&B, Guest Experience, and all other departments as required
  • Role model safe working practices, good customer service and professional behaviour at all times
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations
  • Work with a safety mindset by following all safety policies, procedures and safety measures (i.e. PPE). Identifies and brings forward risks, hazards and opportunities on the job. Actively participates in health and safety in the workplace
  • Maintain a neat, clean and wellgroomed appearance (refer to appearance standards in employee handbook)
  • Report to work on time and for all scheduled shifts
  • Understand all Niagara City Cruises policies and procedures relating to the employee's role within the company
  • Maintain any applicable licenses and certifications
  • Complete any other duties as assigned

Requirements & Qualifications:


  • Minimum Transport Canada Master 150 Gross Tonnage certificate
  • Small Vessel Machinery Operator (training provided)
  • Current Marine Basic First Aid
  • Current (within previous two (2) years) Transport Canada approved medical
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in the marine environment
  • Ship Security Officer certificate an asset
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check
  • A positive attitude and good work ethic
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, wipe, push, pull, move or lift up to 45 pounds (20 kilograms)
  • Walk, stand, sit and work in all types of weather conditions for extended periods
  • Continually and repeatedly perform functions indoors and outdoors
