Labourer - Public Works - Sechelt, Canada - Shishalh Nation

The Position:
The duties of a
public works labourer include various manual labor tasks, predominately outside. You will operate hand and power tools and equipment like lawnmowers, edgers/string trimmers, chainsaws, and leaf blowers. You will work around heavy machinery like, field mowers, backhoes, and cranes. Common tasks include maintaining or building roads, parks, sewage systems, cleaning, repairing/building/installing nation structures and more. This position requires you safely and responsibly operate nation equipment and vehicles.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation, construction, and maintenance of nation facilities.
- Operate light and heavyduty trucks to pick up and deliver materials / supplies.
- Perform basic, carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, cement, and asphalt work.
- Yard and field maintenance including mowing, edging/trimming, fertilizing fields.
- Garbage collection from public waste bins, parks, and community.
- Repair and maintain ditches, drains, roads, signs, sidewalks, and medians.
- Planting, trimming, and clear fallen trees and prepare firewood.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Grade 10 or equivalent.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with a clean abstract.
- Flexibility to respond to callouts.
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, cement and asphalt work is an asset.
- Working familiarity with construction and repair methods, materials, tools and procedures, including basic general knowledge of electricity, plumbing, carpentry and cement and asphalt work.
- Able to perform moderate to heavy manual labour, including frequent bending, walking, and heavy lifting for extended periods of time and in all weather conditions.
- Working experience with a variety of hand and power tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, chainsaw, drills, compressor, spraying equipment, light duty trucks, and small dump trucks.
- Experience operating a skid steer, excavator and backhoe required.
- The following are considered assets: Class 3 BC Driver's License, valid First aid with CPR ticket, Fall Protection Training, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TGD), confined space certification, WHMIS, valid pesticide, and herbicide licenses.
Working conditions:
- Working outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions.
- Dealing with shifting or competing priorities.
- Busy environments, that will require time management and organizational skills.
- Some travel may be required.
- Additional hours may be required.
