    Reporting to the Coordinator, Wastewater Compliance, the Compliance Inspector is responsible for the Administration and enforcement of the Sewer-Use By-law with respect to Industrial, Commercial, Institutional (ICI) dischargers and the emergency spill response program. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Collection, submission and interpretation of chemical and bacteriological samples of sanitary and storm sewer system wastes in accordance with standard procedure.
  • Sampling and monitoring of water quality at storm sewer outfalls, storm water management ponds, groundwater monitoring wells, local tributaries and the Grand River.
  • Implementation of traffic control procedures and all safety requirements associated with working in the roadway. Ensuring all documentation is complete and safety procedures are followed in accordance with municipal and provincial guidelines.
  • Participation in industrial, commercial, and institutional inspection programs, and administration of associated correspondence, agreements, permits, or enforcement activities that may be required.
  • Respond to common and emergency sewer use by-law issues to ensure safety of the environment and the City's compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Organization of field notes, evidence, files, records, and documentation of all Wastewater Compliance activities.
  • Participation in a 24-hour on-call duty rotation as required by the emergency spill response program.
  • Liaise with Provincial and/or Federal officials to assist in administration of their legislation.
  • Ensure all safety equipment is inspected and maintained on a regular basis.
  • Development and review of Standard Operating Procedures relevant to Compliance Inspectors.
  • Any other duties assigned related to Wastewater Compliance.
  • Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a three (3) year Community College Diploma in Chemical or Environmental Engineering Technology or equivalent
  • Membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) would be considered an asset
  • Experience with municipal by-law enforcement, wastewater sampling and emergency spill response would be considered an asset
  • Applicants must be able to meet the physical requirements inherent in wastewater sampling; lifting maintenance access covers and sampling equipment weighing up to 20 kg
  • Applicants must have the ability to interpret laboratory test results, and understand technical drawings and GIS mapping applications
  • Applicants must possess strong communication skills, and be capable of working alone or in a team environment
  • Applicants must be able to work outdoors and drive in potentially adverse weather conditions
  • Applicants must be able to follow technical procedures, traffic and other safety procedures and maintain acceptable housekeeping practices at all times
  • Applicants must have strong math skills and be proficient with computer applications including the MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Applicants must possess a valid Class G driver's licence
  • As a condition of employment, proof of current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications will be required.
