SCOPE

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in the implementation of the following safety programs: working at heights, confined space entry, control of hazardous energy, construction safety, asbestos management, electrical safety and machine safety.
  • Participate in the Construction Safety Program by getting involved in the safety reviews of construction and renovation projects during planning and design, execution and commissioning); conducting risk and hazard assessments for construction and renovation projects; and reviewing project specifications (dévis), specifically for projects involving asbestoscontaining materials.
  • Participate in the Asbestos Management Program by reviewing and planning of medium and high risk asbestos work, verification of the removal of asbestoscontaining materials and assisting with the updating of the asbestos inventory.
  • Develop and provide safety training for the following safety programs: working at heights, confined space entry, control of hazardous energy, construction safety and machine safety.
  • Conduct risk assessment and job hazard assessments, propose corrective actions and oversee the completion of corrective actions.
  • Develop and write program documentation, requirements and other safety documents for workplace hazards and provide strategic, proactive options for mitigating the risk related to those hazards.
  • Work with operations managers and project management team members to develop engagement and change management plans to ensure effective delivery and understanding of safety standards and safety programs.
  • Assist individuals and groups in identifying, evaluating and eliminating hazards in their areas and advises them of their rights and responsibilities.
  • Represent the University to external compliance bodies such as the CNESST.
  • Participate in the Injury Management Program by investigating workplace injuries and nearmisses; conducting root cause analysis; assigning corrective actions; providing support to employees/students and supervisors; and tracking corrective actions completion.
  • Investigate general health and safety complaints.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene or in a field related to the primary responsibilities and four to seven years of work experience preferably in the construction industry or property management.
  • ASP Health and Safety on Construction Sites Course as well a Firstaid training are assets.
  • Good knowledge of the various health and safety regulations (RSST, the safety code, etc.)
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written French and basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken and written English.
  • Good knowledge (Intermediate Level) of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Good organizational, communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, and set priorities.
  • Demonstrated proactive attitude and problemsolving skills.
  • Physical ability to perform primary responsibilities attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to the University's satisfaction.
  • Physical ability to wear and use all necessary personal protective equipment and emergency equipment when needed, including respiratory protection and fall protection.
  • Successful fitness for duty evaluation.
