Summary:


Under the general direction of the Foreman—Custodial, the Custodian 3 is responsible for the cleaning in assigned areas and is responsible for supervising up to 24 hours of custodial time allotted to that facility.


This position performs a diverse range of custodial activities and ensures the facility is clean, sanitized and secured according to procedures established by the school district.

The incumbent oversees the completion of work of other custodians in the facility and provides supervisory leadership in the form of assigning work, training, monitoring, evaluating, and coaching of assigned custodial staff.


Education & Experience:

Grade 12 diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by a Building Service Worker certificate from a recognized institution. A minimum of 3 years related recent experience, including experience in commercial and institutional cleaning including overseeing work performance. A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.


General Description/Duties:

Cleaning all rooms in assigned area according to approved methods and work procedures as established by the school district including the following duties:

  • Controlling dust on all surfaces including furniture, counters, ledges, pictures & bulletin boards hanging on walls, floors, corners, woodwork and school equipment;
  • Maintaining, cleaning and sanitizing washrooms by washing sinks, counters, taps, dispensers, walls, partitions, toilets and urinals, floors and replenishing supplies;
  • Controlling dirt and soil by washing furniture, windows, mirrors, glass partitions, trophy cases, bookshelves, walls, and painted surfaces;
  • Removing all garbage, recycling and compost to outside bins. Reducing waste in favor of composting or recycling wherever possible;
  • Cleaning and relining receptacles as required. Replacing signage on sorting stations as required to assist with the proper sorting of recycling, compost and waste materials;
  • Cleaning and sanitizing water fountains;
  • Replacing burnt out light bulbs. Reporting burnt out ballasts and any nonfunctional light switches or dimmers;
  • Promoting energy conservation through activities such as turning off lights, photocopiers, TV's, coffee makers etc when not in use;
  • Ensuring that lighting is turned off in all areas of the site that are not being actively used and/or cleaned at the time;
  • Securing the building, ensuring that windows and doors are locked after hours. Setting the building alarm at end of shift. Closing and locking parking lot gates;
  • Performing winter activities as required, including but not limited to, salting and shoveling sidewalks, pathways and entrances and salting parking lots with push salt spreaders;
  • Responding to concerns or complaints regarding custodial services in the building, by providing information, investigating problems and intervening as required;
  • Conducting inspections of facility to ensure acceptable district cleaning and sanitation standards are met;
  • Providing technical advice, assistance and information to a broad range of individuals on a regular basis including clients, students, management, external suppliers, inspectors and contractors;
  • Ensuring maintenance and upkeep on equipment used in the Custodial department including maintaining an inventory list and providing training to others;
  • Ensuring that buildings in the assigned area are secured at the appointed hours and that unauthorized people are not permitted to remain;
  • Performing monthly fire bell tests and report;
  • Maintaining supply inventories by submitting orders and ensuring that orders and equipment received are properly received, stored, maintained, rotated and used in accordance with district standards;
  • Working with the Foreman—Custodial, to develop and implement annual cleaning plans for facility including summer team clean planning and project work for Pro-D days / school breaks;
  • Arranging for the submission of work requests through the site clerical person or through the custodial foreman for damages or required repairs, as they occur, in your assigned area;
  • Maintain accurate written records as required;
  • Responding to workplace incidents and emergencies, completing appropriate paperwork and when necessary participating in workplace incident investigations;
  • Maintaining knowledge of shutoff valve procedures, plumbing, heating, electrical and security systems (fire prevention and intrusion) of the facility;
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of district operational/personnel policies related to the position including the Community Use Program;
