Corporate Finance is seeking a Sales Tax and Compliance Officer to work closely with fellow Sales Tax Officers and the Manager, Sales Tax and Compliance in providing sales tax support and analysis for the N.

Harris Group.

  • This is a temporary 20 month position based out of the Ottawa Office.
  • Responsibility:
  • Accurate and timely completion of required sales and use or commodity tax returns.-
  • Properly code and maintain customer tax-exempt status in system including obtaining, imaging and storing sales tax certificates.
  • Effectively communicate with internal and external customers concerning exemption certificates including corrections for incomplete or incorrect certificates and expired certificates.
  • Approve and process tax credits and tax billing invoices within authority levels.
  • Participates in third party compliance initiatives. This may include procuring necessary detailed information, managing the audit process, discussions with auditors, preparation of requested schedules, formation of dispute work papers and support, post-audit documentation and communicating with various Harris personnel.
  • Escalates prevalent issues to leadership as needed.
  • Proactively establish and maintain internal controls to minimize compliance or audit issues.
  • Verify data integrity and compliance through consistent monitoring and auditing.
  • Monitor state and local sales and use tax developments, including understanding how these developments affect the company's operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • To perform this job successfully, you must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 2+ years of experience working in Accounting and Finance or a diploma in accounting and finance or related field from an accredited institution
  • Excellent databased and creative problem solving skills with the ability to make recommendations based on investigation and judgment as well as ability to discern when to escalate issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, ability to adjust communication based on customer situation.
  • A positive approach and willingness to learn coupled with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior sales tax experience a plus.
