The Program

WJS Canada (which includes Spirit of Our Youth Homes Inc.), a national social services agency with offices in BC, Alberta & Ontario, is contracted by the government through over 90 contracts to provide community-based services to children and families, persons with developmental disabilities and at-risk youth.

Each day 700 dedicated staff serve approximately 1,300 persons through over 125 services and WJS Canada revenues exceed $50 million annually.

In Your Role You Will

  • Establish, direct and integrate the business, and finance operations of a growing multimilliondollar company.
  • Work closely with the Regional Service Directors to ensure the finance department is supporting the operational group with meeting their financial targets
  • Coordinate financial statements, annual financial reports, audit activities, and other information reports and requests; ensuring accuracy and integrity of financial reporting.
  • Provide direction and assistance to regions/programs on accounting/budgeting policies and procedures, implementation of new practices and procedures, and efficient control and utilization of financial resources.
  • Develop budget templates; oversee budget preparation and process; consolidate regional budgets into an annual agency budget.
  • Develop and manage annual agency budgets and perform periodic cost and productivity analyses.
  • Maintain WJS Canada's asset management records (rental, leased, and owned property and equipment).
  • Supervise and manage staff, as required
  • Participate in establishing and implementing short and longterm department goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate effectiveness; effect changes required for improvement.
  • Participate in developing agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and implement initiatives based on agency policies and procedures, federal and provincial policies and directives, and current accounting practices which directly or indirectly impact the agency.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and healthy physical environment and adheres to OHS requirements.
  • May serve as the agency's audit coordinator.
  • Perform miscellaneous jobrelated duties as assigned.
The Position

The Controller for our social services agency, recommends, implements and controls accounting policies and procedures, as well as, coordinates/operates accounting, taxation, data control, accounts payable, and contract functions of the agency.

The incumbent will also prepare consolidated financial statements and various financial reports and ensure all business transactions, policies and procedures meet the agency's short and long-term goals and objectives.

Criminal Record Check/Ministry Check Statement

  • Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.
  • Bachelor's Degree in related business, administrative, financial or other discipline or a Diploma in financial management
  • Possess an accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA, CPA) or actively working toward an accounting designation.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a senior accounting position in a multifunctional company.
  • Previous experience hiring, coaching, evaluating and managing staff.
  • Skill in the use of Windows, Sage Intacct ERP and Microsoft Office 36
  • Able to develop financial plans and manage resources.
  • Experience using software to quantify and illustrate complex financial reports, comparisons, impacts and/or projections.
  • Skill in examining and reengineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing new strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques.
  • Skilled in reviewing/assessing the viability of new and existing contractual arrangements and proposals.
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial financial regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards preferred.
  • Strategic planning skills.
  • A reliable vehicle and some travel will be required
