HOURS OF WORK 35 hours per week. Weekend and
evening work required.


CLASSIFICATION Library Assistant
SALARY $26.22 during probation (3 months)
$28.35 after probation

Reporting to the CEO and Head Librarian, the Library Assistant - Circulation and Library Promotion, will
be the first point of contact for members of the public and will demonstrate a firm commitment to
friendly, high-quality service to all library patrons. The individual will perform public service functions in
the City of Kenora Public Library which includes circulation, collections management, and library
promotion along with reader's advisory reference services and program, planning and execution.


The Library Assistant will:


  • Be responsible for complete operation of library during scheduled times and assisting patrons
with accessing Library services, the use of Library computers/technology and troubleshooting
basic technological problems.

  • Check in and check out library materials at the public desk and respond to patron questions and
concerns in-person and by phone.

  • Register, update, and renew library memberships.
  • Handle and process requests and holds for the public.
  • Maintain newspaper and periodical subscription records/collection.
  • Share responsibility for the physical processing and maintenance of library materials and the
- handling of items removed from the collection. Repair and mend library materials.
  • Shelve material and ensure the collection is maintained in a neat and organized fashion.
  • Maintain and develop the collection and library displays.
  • Promote the library, programs, and services through all available media.
  • Update and maintain library webpage and social media.
  • Assist with and deliver books through the Home Delivery Program.
  • Participate in programs, attend workshops and courses which foster professional or technical
- development where applicable and approved.
  • Collect daily and monthly statistical data for reporting purposes.
  • Assist with Adult Programming
  • Cash handling duties and performing bookkeeping tasks such as invoicing and accounts
- payable, collection of fines and overdue accounts.
  • Assist in training/monitoring Pages, Volunteers, and other staff as assigned.
  • Sort/pick up mail and perform light cleaning duties
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


  • High school graduation or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Completed postsecondary education and/or combination of education and experience in library
- services, education, social services, or related field preferred.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties of the position including heavy lifting.
  • Previous work experience with the public and/or in a library setting an asset.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to work with other staff as part of a team.
  • Ability to work under mínimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate library equipment.
  • Familiarity with social media administration (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube),
- webpage development, and with Microsoft Office. Keyboarding skills an asset.
  • Ability to handle cash accurately.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to connect and build rapport with a diverse client population with varied cultural, ethnic,
and educational backgrounds.
