Carte International is looking for a
Health and Safety Specialist to provide technical expertise to enable our business to manage risk and protect the wellbeing of our people.

The Health and Safety Specialist will be focused on the development and delivery of the Carte Safety Management System and will have comprehensive knowledge of occupational health and safety best practices and a thorough understanding of operational management systems within a manufacturing environment.

What you'll do

  • Influence and participate in the development of occupational health and safety standards, processes, procedures, and work aids.
  • Keep abreast of emerging regulatory changes, industry trends and issues to develop recommendations to mitigate risk.
  • Ensure effective processes are in place to help facilitate business decisions.
  • Establish and maintain governance to monitor the health and safety performance of Carte's Safety Management System.
  • Foster a positive safety culture by building human and organizational performance to strengthen our cultural and develop errortolerant systems to better protect our employees.
  • Support the daytoday operations through regular contact with managers and shift lead hands and frontline personnel.
  • Manage and lead organizationwide health and safety program initiatives.
  • Participate in contractor reviews, monitor contractor performance and liaise with contractor management on a regularly.
  • Develop and promote innovative Health and Safety program elements to support continuous improvement of the Health and Safety management system.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to incident investigations, emergency response, audits, and assurance activities as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post secondary degree or diploma related to Health and Safety.
  • Certification or accreditation with a professional safety board (CRSP, CSP or equivalent, or in the process of attaining designation).
  • 5 years of experience as a health and safety program leader or related experience preferably within a unionized manufacturing environment.
  • Technical proficiency in the areas of occupational health and safety programs, operational management systems, conducting safety audits, delivering safety related training and designing modified or gradual return to work plans.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Health and Safety Act, provincial regulations, and WCB programs.
  • Proven conflict resolution skills with the ability to maintain composure while dealing with challenging situations in an effort to address workplace safety issues.
  • Exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong technical writing ability with demonstrated experience writing, developing and implementing work instructions, processes and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills to work closely with all levels of the organization, and coordinate work with other appropriate stakeholder groups.
  • Selfmotivated strong time management and prioritization skills coupled with the ability to work independently and in an organized manner.
  • Proficient in the use of a computer and computer software programs: Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint),
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, able to handle rapidly shifting priorities as well as multiple projects concurrently.
