Qualifications:
- Diploma in Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Program
- One to two years of relevant work experience
- Long term care experience is considered an asset
- Current CPR/First Aide Certification required
- WHIMIS Certification required
- Knowledge of the following:
- Medical Terminology
- Falls Prevention Methods / Risk Management Procedures
- Proper Body Mechanics
- Therapy and Counselling
- Principles of geriatric restorative care
- Customer and Personal Service
- Neurologic, orthopedic, cardio and respiratory treatment
- Must have excellent communication, interpersonal, problem solving, time management, judgment and decisionmaking skills
Major Responsibilities:
- Promotes the functional abilities of residents while assisting with daily personal care and activities of daily living.
- Works collaboratively with the CCA/PCW team members to support daily resident personal care, meal assistance and mobility strategies.
- Works collaboratively with the interdepartmental team (RN, LPN, CCA, Recreation, OT, PT and Building OT/PTA).
- Functions as an integral member of the floor based care team.
- Communicates with the Nursing team, Recreation Team, OT and PT.
- In conjunction with the wing based team, incorporates mobility maintenance strategies into the care routine.
- Promotes the safety of residents (e.g. educates staff and patients, monitors equipment)
Tasks:
- Follows the care plan to support resident activities of daily living (including personal hygiene, assisting with meal time/feeding, and mobility).
- Carries out prescribed treatment programs as set out by a registered OT or PT ( mobility maintenance strategies)
- Makes verbal and written reports to the therapist on the clients' progress.
- Records on the residents record in PCC and documents in POC
- Reports unsafe equipment to RN/LPN and communicates to other equipment users that the equipment is unsafe for use.
- Collaborates with building OT/PTA to replace broken equipment when possible (walkers, wheelchairs)
- Instructs, motivates, safeguards and assists residents as they practice exercises or functional activities
- Identifies areas where there is a lack of clarity in the care routines
- Monitors changes over time in residents daily living skills and mobility.
- Ensures work areas are organized.
- Performs other related duties as required
Salary:
As per Shoreham's scale
Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly (8 hour shifts)
