Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in Job Summary Reporting to the Central Plant Manager/Chief Operating Engineer, the incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following: Key Responsibilities
    • Operates and monitors Dalhousie boiler and chiller plant systems serving the campus and external clients for maximum efficiency and effective performance (includes fuel delivery system, water treatment facility, fans, pumps, deaerator, diesel generator, etc.)
    • Monitors and operates energy management controls systems utilizing Metasys/Rockwell Plant Control System to maximize safety, comfort and energy efficiency supporting the research intense campus.
    • Performs maintenance and minor repairs on Thermal Plant systems and equipment to ensure reliable operation
    • Manages water treatment quality control for chillers and boilers including sampling, testing and adjusting dosage to maintain systems water quality within required parameters.
    • Interfaces with building occupants, Facilities Management Staff and Security Services on an ongoing basis
    • Completes run sheets that indicate system conditions on regularly scheduled intervals
    • Maintains accurate record of Thermal Plant activities in the daily log book for each shift
    • Completes and records daily, weekly and monthly inspection preventive maintenance routines sheets
    • Responds appropriately to critical alarms by investigating and analyzing upset conditions in order to identify and correct problems or request assistance
    • Maintains a clean work environment in the thermal plant
    • Assumes Acting Chief Operating Engineer duties when requested
    • Performs Rink Operator duties at Arena when requested
    • Performs all duties in accordance with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
    • Performs other duties as required
    Note Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus. Dalhousie's vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary. Required Qualifications
    • Valid 2nd Class Power Engineer's certificate (standardized) recognised by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour or equivalent
    • Five years recent and related experience
    • Knowledge and understanding of computerized control systems including energy management controls systems (EMCS) (i.e. Johnson Controls Metasys/Rockwell Plant Control System) and computerized burner management and boiler modulating controls systems (digital controls systems (DCS)) required
    • Familiarity with computer use and various programs related business settings
    • Good communication and organizational skills
    • Ability to read and interpret drawings/blueprints
    • Familiar with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
    • Ability to take direction, a self starter, be flexible in working hours, willing to perform overtime as required and willingness to work alone
    • Ability to direct others in foreperson capacity preferred
    • General safety and WHMIS training an asset
