Inclusive Support Worker:

PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Principal of Quw'utsun Smuneem Elementary School and working in collaboration with the School Counsellor, the Inclusive Support Worker will promote behavioural change and personal growth for students who may have a range of exceptional abilities.

This position will ensure the social, emotional and physical well-being of all assigned students at the school. This position is 55-hours bi-weekly and works primarily at the school, with mínimal local travel required. This is a term position for the remainder of the 2023/2024 school year.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The position includes paid training and paid sick leave. Depending on experience and qualifications, the position starts between $23.49-$24.91 per hour and $26.44-$28.04 per hour.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Work in consultation with a schoolbased team including the principal, teachers, school counsellor, dedicated professionals and families to support a student's physical, emotional and behavioural needs
  • Provide basic counselling, ongoing assistance, encouragement and support to students developing and achieving appropriate behaviour, personal and life skill goals
  • Assist students with selfregulation strategies in partnership with schoolbased team
  • Prevent, document and followup with students who exhibit any unregulated behaviors
  • Assess students' primary needs through traumainformed practices
  • Facilitate and coordinate group sessions for students based on Individual Education Plan
  • Attend and participate in schoolbased team meetings, staff meetings and professional development as required
  • Integrate Cowichan culture, values, and language in school based activities where appropriate
  • Adhere to policies and procedures to meet the obligations of the school
  • Supervise students when involved in program related activities, during recess and lunch period as required
  • Utilize and support internal resources when appropriate
  • Prepare, assist and coordinate group and extracurricular activities as directed
  • Create a safe learning environment for all students
  • Ensure students safety at all time
  • Develop positive relationships with students and staff
  • Demonstrate positive role model behaviors to students
  • Keep daily anecdotal records
  • Complete light cleaning duties as needed
  • Other related duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
_(please attach all required documents)_**- Grade 12 or equivalent required

  • Certification in Child & Youth Care, Social Work or equivalent required
  • Special Needs Educator Assistant Certificate, Special & Inclusive Education Diploma, ABA Therapy Certificate or related certification an asset
  • 2 years' experience working with students who have a range of socialemotional, physical or cognitive abilities
  • Understanding and experience utilizing traumainformed practices
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention training an asset
  • Completed Autism course work or other related course work an asset
  • Experience working in a First Nations community is essential
  • Valid First-Aid / CPR-C Certification preferred
  • Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector clearance required
  • Effective December 1, 2021: full vaccination against COVID19 is required to be eligible for employment at Cowichan Tribes.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with students and adapt to accommodate a variety of learning styles
  • Ability to establish methods and procedures while exercising independent judgment when necessary
  • Demonstrate tact, courtesy and discretion
  • Ability to accurately collect student data and/or information
  • Basic computer skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable resources
  • Selfmotivated to carry out any duties as assigned with mínimal supervision or direction
  • Strengthsbased approach with a compassionate attitude and understanding of child development
  • Ability to maintain and uphold confidentiality
  • Must be physically able to endure rigorous and constant physical activity
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Knowledge and understanding of Hul'q'umi'num' language, Cowichan culture and traditions or a willingness to learn
