Job Summary

This position supports grant funded work for serological and genomic analyses of infectious organisms of public health importance. The applicant will work closely with the project team on the technical aspects of processing various types of blood samples (sera, plasma, dried blood spots) for antibody detection testing and helping with development of genomics analyses for
_M. tuberculosis._


This work may include patient personal data and the individual must understand and exemplify the ethics of confidentiality, sensitivity, and respect when communicating all study information.

The applicant must be exceptionally detail-orientated and organized and able to follow and help in the design of experimental protocols, including the development of standard operating procedures.

They must be able to prioritize tasks to ensure that time-sensitive duties are completed in priority.

This person must also be self-directed, able to excel in a team environment, know personal limitations and take initiative to ask for assistance when needed.

Organizational Status


The applicant reports to the project PI and will work primarily in an autonomous role, thus previous experience in research is critical.

The position will be held at the research facilities located within the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory, affiliated with UBC CDC.

Remote work encouraged when it is possible, however the applicant will mostly work on-site due to the technical nature of the position.


Work Performed:

General duties:

  • Assist the supervisor and research team with the design of experiments
  • Assist the supervisor and research team with literature review related to technical aspects of experiment design
  • Manage and oversee daily testing and ensure quality control of the testing
  • Plan weekly testing schedule to guarantee meeting project deadlines
  • Generate sample line lists based on the project's need
  • Ensure that the laboratory conforms with relevant laboratory safety guidelines as they pertain to testing
  • Ensure equipment maintenance and coordinate service appointments with providers
  • Keep meticulous records of work and troubleshooting problems
  • Keep track of participant results in an excel file or the laboratory information system linked to demographic data as needed
  • Analyze and summarize results for clinical reports, publications, and presentations at team meetings, including graph preparation
  • Summarize and archive relevant literature and project documents
  • Lead the writing of validation reports
  • Keep track of materials inventory and place orders in a timely manner to ensure work continuity
  • Assist with tracking and organizing financial

Serology-specific duties:

  • Punch and elute dried blood spot (DBS) samples collected from participants as needed
  • Perform phage immunoprecipitation sequencing (VirScan):
  • Complex plasma antibodies with bacteriophages and immunoprecipitation
  • Library preparation and sequencing
  • Bacteriophage expansion
  • Coordinate sample pickup and drop off to the laboratory
  • Organize longterm storage of clinical samples
  • Perform validations and develop new operating procedures for as required, for example for different sample types
  • Provide training to trainees on DBS processing and/or VirScan procedures.

Genomics-specific duties:

  • Optimize extraction protocols for high quality long reads DNA sequencing
  • Optimize wet lab protocols for high quality long reads DNA sequencing
  • Perform extraction and wet lab parts of next generation sequencing (Illumina and Nanopore platforms)
  • Organize sample storage
  • Write detailed and high quality SOPs on developed processes
Consequence of Error/Judgement

The applicant is required to conduct all activities in an ethical manner.

Any procedures or data recorded as part of this research must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed.

Strict confidentiality of all project participants is critical.

Errors made could influence the ability of researchers to interpret data correctly, delay the timely completion of work, and thus compromise the results of research projects.
