ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
This role reports to Mathias Schuetz, Biology instructor.


SUMMARY
The Student Research Assistant has a supportive role for carrying out research under the supervision of Biology faculty members (e.g. Mathias Schuetz).

This is an educational role with the intent of providing learning opportunities and practical training to the individual while they are enrolled as a student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

This individual will support applied research projects under the supervision and direction of the Biology faculty member.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engage in handson training in proper laboratory techniques and following previously generated standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in gathering experimental data in the laboratory and in the field when required.
  • Execute experiments required for research projects (following hands on training).
  • Contribute data and, where appropriate, assist in preparing graphs, charts, reports, and presentations, collaboratively and under the direction of the Biology faculty member.
  • Perform general lab tasks such as cleaning and organizing lab equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in an appropriate academic program at KPU.
  • Successful completion of some foundational courses in applicable Biology topics (may include Genetics, Microbiology, Botany, Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, chemistry, horticulture, environmental protection or others).
  • Experience performing molecular biology techniques such as plasmid isolation from bacterial cultures, PCR, Gel electrophoresis etcare an asset for this position.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written English language skills.
  • Detail oriented, with excellent organizational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work alone or in groups.
  • Ability to use office technologies effectively and to adapt to new technologies that may be introduced.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a team.

Work hours will be 1-15 hours depending on schedule
