  • Job SummaryAs stewards of the campus, Facilities Management fosters and enriches an inviting and functional environment that welcomes and supports all who come here. Facilities Management clients include faculty, staff and students. As part of Facilities Management the Instrument & Controls Shop reflects high service delivery standards and requirements. The team works together to ensure effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, maintenance and repair of building systems on campus.


The Lead Hand Instrument Controls Technician performs duties at the technologist level in the field of process control and instrumentation.

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Lead Hand coordinates and distributes the work of Instrument Controls staff as assigned to deliver trade and technical services for general maintenance or new installation work.

Provides coaching and advice to assigned Instrument Controls staff. Completes time keeping and recording keeping work associated with the crew assignment. Maintains safe working conditions. Troubleshoots operating problems and mechanical failures related to instrument control systems in both building and process control systems. Prepares for project work in the assigned areas of responsibility. Assists the supervisor with estimating. Relieves for supervisor in their absence as required.

  • Ability to use initiative and varied skills in diagnosing and effecting repairs.
  • Ability to carry out an effective work schedule, under general supervision and utilize materials and equipment for maximum benefit.
  • Ability to plan and organize work efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to repair and maintain refrigeration control systems.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, related computing equipment and software including MS office suite and work order software.

Specialized Knowledge/Education:

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship or formal training program acceptable to employer.
  • Technologist designation (ASTTBC) field of study; Instrumentation & Controls, Mechanical or Electrical & Computer (Electrical Power/Industrial Controls Option).
  • Instrumentation & Controls Technician (Mechanic) TQ.
  • Limited Electrical Work TQ. (i.e. Heating, Low Energy or class C Endorsement)
  • Extensive Direct Digital Controls (DDC) experience.
  • Extensive pneumatic control experience.
  • Programmable Logic Controls (PLC) experience
  • Extensive institutional HVAC experience or equivalent

Experience:


  • Minimum of four years' experience as an instrument controls technician in a journeyperson or technician role.
  • 1 year shop/plant leadhand type experience in an institutional or industrial setting.
  • Planning, organizing and monitoring daytoday work activities and standards in a shop and/or plant environment.
  • Confident use of a computerized maintenance management work order system.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to work any recognized shift including weekends.
