CADTH is Canada's drug and health technology agency. We're a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Ottawa, with a satellite office in Toronto.

We're funded by Canada's federal, provincial, and territorial governments to provide independent information and advice to the country's publicly funded health care systems.

Health administrators and policy experts rely on CADTH to inform their decisions about the funding and appropriate use of the drugs, devices, and services used to prevent, diagnose, and treat medical conditions.


Primary Focus


The Ethics Advisor leads the conduct and reporting of ethical reviews by guiding methodologies, helping to define efficient and effective quality standards, and by reviewing final reports to ensure compliance with established internal processes and the publication of methodologically sound and high-quality reports.


On any given day, the Ethics Advisor will:

  • Conduct ethics reviews in the context of select CADTH projects (e.g., Cell & Gene therapies); Uphold methodological rigour in the conduct and reporting of ethics reviews at CADTH.
  • Lead the internal scoping activity for the ethics domain for select CADTH projects.
  • Critically review draft protocols and reports of ethics reviews, as prepared by CADTH staff or ethics contractors, including assessing against and ensuring adherence with appropriate methodological practice and quality standards.
  • Act as a project owner for ethics reviews, providing project oversight and ensuring completion of ethics reviews within timelines.
  • Provide input to the Lead, Ethics on technical education and training on ethics for internal staff, committees, or CADTH customers.
  • Collaborate across the organization with other teams to effectively deliver on reports produced.
  • Provide presentations to internal and external audiences including training sessions.
  • Liaise with a broad network of contacts in the field with a view to attract contractors and peerreviewers.

Is this the right role for you?

The Ethics Advisor will likely have:

  • A graduate degree in moral philosophy, bioethics, or health-related social sciences with related health ethics experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in conducting applied ethics analyses, including appraising, and synthesizing relevant literature, identifying values of stakeholders, and articulating the ethical considerations in a written report.
  • Indepth knowledge of classical theories of moral philosophy and common ethical issues that arise in health care.
  • Understanding of the Canadian health care system, relevant legislation/regulation and decisionmaking processes as it relates to CADTH reports.
  • Ability to speak effectively before expert groups and/or diverse audiences.
  • Experience at working collaboratively as part of multidisciplinary teams with different expertise in ethical considerations.
  • Ability to work well with others in a fastpaced, dynamic environment, prioritizing, and balancing multiple competing tasks effectively.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable, and teamoriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
