PURPOSE OF POSITION


The City of Brantford is located within the lands of the Haldimand Proclamation and has a historical, unique, and close relationship with the Canada's largest Indigenous community based on population - Six Nations of the Grand River.

Located 100 kilometers west of Toronto, the City of Brantford is undergoing a historic demographic transformation as it grows with new citizens moving from the Greater Toronto Area and abroad representing many diverse cultures, languages, and customs.

Reporting directly to the Office of the Chief, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the Brantford Police Service's diversity and inclusion initiatives, planning, developing, and managing robust diversity and inclusion strategies, programs and projects, and fostering a culture of respect, equity, and accessibility that is free of discrimination for all members and ensuring that the Brantford Police Service is inclusive, barrier-free, and reflective of the population of Brantford.


We are looking to onboard professionals who have expertise in evidence-based decision-making in policing and knowledge of data collection and analysis.

The Specialist will coordinate policy, programs, and evaluation development, and work to identify, address and prevent systemic racism in policy, practices, programs and services by developing and supporting the implementation of anti-racism tools and resources.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish within the Brantford Police Service a Diversity and Inclusion Working Group to develop and implement a diversity and inclusion strategy.
  • Collaborate across the organization to ensure a diversity strategy is thoroughly implemented by providing recommendations and operational tactics.
  • Provide expert knowledge of principles related to employment equity, intercultural communication, Indigenous issues, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Consultation in the strictest of confidence to the Office of the Chief for Professional Standards matters related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Develop strong relationships with the cultural groups (i.e., Muslim Association, Sikh Association, Brantford Regional Indigenous Support Centre) in and around the City of Brantford to foster open and trusting communication.
  • Provide candid feedback and recommendations to eliminate hidden and/or unfair barriers to success in the workplace.
  • Identify and eliminate hidden and/or unfair barriers or systemic patterns that result in diverse applicants being eliminated for volunteer, civilian, and sworn positions.
  • Manage the annual diversity and inclusion accountability process and provide updates to senior leadership and the Brantford Police Services Board.
  • Assist the Brantford Police Services Board to create a Diversity Plan.
  • Work with key stakeholders and partners to attract, retain, and advance top talent from underrepresented backgrounds and report on progress to senior leadership.
  • Serve as a change agent and influencer to provide strategies, solutions, training, tools, resources, and thought leadership on diversity and inclusion.
  • Commit to innovation and implementation of new concepts.
  • Provide insight, data and analytics, and content around inclusion and diversity to support change management initiatives, learning, and communication strategies at the Brantford Police Service.
  • Develop and implement reporting and monitoring mechanisms that track the progress and overall effectiveness of diversity and inclusion programs, initiatives, and activities at the Brantford Police Service.
  • Liaise with the Training Section to review, evaluate and develop training curriculum and scenarios that are reflective of equity, diversity and inclusion demands on the Brantford Police Service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge / Skills

  • A University degree in Human Resources, Diversity and Human Rights, Social Studies, Law, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Canadian Certified Inclusion designation or Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion Leadership an asset
  • Professional (CCIP) is preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in Human Resources and/or Diversity and Inclusion, Human Rights and Equity, or Indigenous Inclusion and Reconciliation, with demonstrated experience in managing people, resources, and budgets.
  • Demonstrated track record of succes
