Responsibilities:


Tax:


  • Tax Compliance
  • Annual preparation of trust, partnership and corporate returns
  • Distribution analysis considering cash distribution, noncash distributions and allocations between taxable income, capital gains and return of capital
  • Tax considerations with normal course issuer bids and equity issuances
  • Ongoing review of REIT and SIFT compliance
  • Involvement with GST/HST/PST filings
  • Involvement with payroll tax withholdings
  • Quarterly preparation of tax provision for financial reporting purposes
  • Special Projects
  • Ongoing tax research for potential acquisitions, dispositions, restructuring, etc.
  • Prepare tax research memos as needed, including current development research (i.e. EIFEL, enhanced trust disclosure, etc.)
  • Manage any tax audits (income, payroll, sales)
  • Internal Tax Advisor
  • Resource to organization for tax questions, concerns or considerations

Government Relations:


  • Government Liaison
  • Liaise with respective municipal, provincial and federal governments
  • Industry Liaison
  • Liaise with multifamily peer group as needed
  • Liaise with real estate representative groups as needed (i.e. REALPAC, CRRA, etc.)
  • Liaise with industry interest groups as needed
  • Special Projects
  • Ad hoc projects relating to government relations
  • Lobbying Activities
  • Researching lobbying requirements in jurisdictions and managing registration and reporting as needed
Education and Experience
Minimum 3 years specializing in tax in a public accounting firm
Professional accounting designation (CPA)
Enrollment or completion of the In-Depth Tax Course (or equivalent)
Experience with Real Estate Investment Trusts is an asset
Technical Requirements
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
Ability to learn and adapt to changing systems and new technology
Non-Technical Requirements
Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain utmost confidentiality
Self-starter, ability to work with significant autonomy demonstrating clear initiative; both independently and within teams
Excel under time-sensitive environment.
Superior written and verbal English communication skills are required
Proven ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
Ability to provide persuasive and self-assured responses to challenging questions.
