Description of Position:
The Langara Professional Photography program is looking for a new instructor for our Commercial Photography course. We have a diverse student body and want our faculty to reflect their lived perspectives.
Our Commercial Photography students focus on three main areas: small products, interior architecture, and food & beverage photography.
- The calendar description for the course reads:
_Students explore a variety of commercial photography genres: product photography, interior and exterior architecture, and food and beverage photography.
Digital medium format and DSLR cameras, in conjunction with studio and location flash lighting, are used to capture high quality images.
Students collaborate with students from other departments in the Creative Arts Division. Studio and location demonstrations and peer critiques complement lectures._The topics covered in this course are:
- _ Introduction to commercial assisting and digital tech with medium format cameras_
- _ Studio product photography: creating extraction masks_
- _ Studio product photography: painting with light_
- _ Product photography on location: creation of advertising_
- _ Large object product photography_
- _ Interior architecture: composition, HDR and flash for colour_
- _ Interior architecture: accent lighting and creating photographic plates_
- _ Food photography in the studio, food styling_
- _ Food photography in a restaurant. Working with a chef and in a restaurant's space_
- _ Beverage photography: styling of beverages_
- _ High frame rate video capture_
Required Qualifications:
Masters degree (or equivalent
)
- Master of Photography Arts from either the Professional Photographers of America or the Professional Photographers of Canada and six years of fulltime work experience closely related to the program instructional areas.
- Or Fellow of the Royal Photographers Society and six years of fulltime work experience closely related to the to the program instructional areas.
- Or A Bachelor's degree with appropriate major (Photography) and a twoyear Diploma in Photography.
- Or A Certificate in Professional Photography which contains at least 8 months of full time instruction, plus ten years practical experience directly related to photography, plus evidence of membership in one of: the Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators, Professional Photographers of Canada, Professional Photographers of America or News Photographers Association of Canada.
Experience using a Mac operating system
The following core competencies:
Professional level foundation knowledge of Photoshop, Lightroom, Nikon, Sony or Canon DSLR, and studio lighting; specifically Profoto Studio Lighting
Demonstrable advanced knowledge of medium format digital cameras (i.e. PhaseOne or Hasselblad) and capture software
Demonstrable knowledge of shooting and creating masks, including close cutting products in Photoshop
Present a portfolio of images including product photography, interior architecture, food photography, beverage photography and other commercial photography.
3-5 years of teaching experience
Teaching experience with college-level photography courses
3-5 years experience in the field of professional photography
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain currency and strive for excellence in instructional practices and pedagogy
Ensure effective use of available class time and supervise lab/studio time
Maintain appropriate office hours to ensure availability for student consultation
Must attend department meetings and assist with department duties
Maintain collegial working relationships, actively contributing to the department and College
