Your role

  • You will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You will further our original, enterprise and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout the region.
  • You confidently use sources including documents, data, access to information laws, and confidential and community sources to uncover news. You are a strong and articulate storyteller who will report live into the local radio morning show.
  • You're innovative and will try new things, new workflows and new story treatments. You inspire others to do the same.
  • As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You understand the makeup of the region and its diverse population in order to reflect our communities in the stories you tell. You are a champion of representing underrepresented people and communities in your storytelling.
  • At CBC Kitchener-Waterloo, we work as one station. As a reporter, you will be part of the team that prepares content for newscasts, digital platforms and the morning radio program.

  • You might be assigned to a work shift that includes occasional or regular 7 am starts or 9 pm finishes, or an ongoing/rotating Sunday shift.

Key tasks:


  • Produce journalistic content for a variety of platforms including digital, social media, radio and video.
  • Take quality photographs and video in a variety of situations, as needed.
  • Gather highquality audio.
  • Edit material for use on all platforms.
  • Post content to website and social media platforms.
  • Cover events using social media tools.
  • Monitor developing news through a variety of sources.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with sources to ensure current knowledge of issues and events.
  • Arrange for, and conduct interviews.
  • Contribute story ideas and creative treatments.
  • On occasion, vet or edit stories and scripts written by colleagues.
  • A university degree or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent experience writing news for a major professional online publication or broadcaster.
  • Experience in determining potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations and ability to act on them.
  • Proven ability to write with appropriate flow, clarity and brevity, and to write/edit engaging headlines, photo captions and teaser summaries.
  • Track record of generating original and innovative stories with creative treatments, including visual storytelling.
  • Experience handling breaking news and quick turnarounds.
  • A team player who is willing to work cooperatively with producers and colleagues in story development and vetting.
  • Working knowledge of the diverse communities in and around Waterloo region.
  • Strong understanding and familiarity with social media and the ways it can be creatively used for journalism.
  • Performance skills including strong presentation style and a good voice for broadcast.
  • An aptitude for working with a variety of digital tools.
  • Flexibility with hours of work (including evenings and weekends) and willingness to learn and take on new tasks across all CBC's platforms.
  • Solid news judgement and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Proven ability to work independently on stories.

  • A valid driver's licence of G or better level.
