Bilingual Underwriting Consultant - Innovation

What will you do?

  • Evolve and monitor the Underwriting Rules Engine to maximize straight through underwriting while maintaining Sun Life's underwriting guidelines and philosophies
  • Support the continuous development of our predictive underwriting model
  • Complete research of new technology and data sources in the support of underwriting innovation.
  • Utilize various data sources in mortality/morbidity assessments
  • Audit model performance to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, risk tolerance and financial expectations.
  • Maintain strong risk management while balancing the experience of our customers and advisors
  • Complete updates to underwriting guidelines and philosophies to enhance Sun Life's position as a leader in the Canadian market
  • Review medical analysis and clinical research to support product development and underwriting innovation.
  • Collaborate with the Product, Pricing, Risk, Operations and other Underwriting leadership to develop new insurance products.
  • Keep up to date with medical knowledge, developments and trends in underwriting and the insurance industry.
  • Conduct protective value assessments and strategies to advance personalized underwriting, while ensuring sufficient information is available to enable effective risk assessment.
  • Mentor and cosign on cases as needed

What do you need to succeed?

  • Minimum 710 years of progressive underwriting experience as a technical Individual Life Underwriter
  • Existing Life and Critical Illness signing authorities
  • Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for the frequent interactions with English and Frenchspeaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada and worldwide and the position reports to a unilingual Englishspeaking manager outside Quebec.
  • Innovative thinker
  • Understanding of risk factors relating to mortality/morbidity risk management (medical, financial, occupational, environmental, etc.);
  • Strong understanding of insurance principles including mortality, insurable interest and actuarial theory; compliance with insurance, privacy and AML regulations; reinsurance treaties, and autobind retention limits; and individual life insurance products and riders
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all levels of seniority and on cross functional teams, as well as work individually.
  • Sound business judgment, results oriented, customer focused, and excellent negotiation, relationship building and influencing skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to handle written and telephone inquiries of a sensitive nature
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Team player with a positive attitude and commitment to provide quality service
  • Proven track record of acting as a coach/mentor
  • Proven time management abilities, prioritizing multiple tasks
  • Specialized training: ALU certificate and commitment to ongoing education with a goal of attaining the Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) designations Detail oriented and accuracy
