    Job Summary

    Dalhousie Financial Services strives to provide the highest quality financial services and information and ensure the effective stewardship of University assets to the benefit of students and scholarly activities. Financial Services is a core service unit of the University, providing services in areas of financial accounting, budgeting, procurement and risk management, cash management, and financial systems and policies. Reporting to the Associate Director, Finance Operations, the Manager, Accounting & Financial Reporting is a key resource in coordinating operations in the Controller's Office, supporting financial close activities, ensuring the appropriate internal controls and application of accounting principles, and providing guidance to junior staff on actions to resolve identified issues .

    Key Responsibilities

  • Supports financial reporting activities by planning, coordinating, and monitoring the outcomes of tasks, and advising on controls and process inefficiencies.
  • Investigates and resolves issues related to financial reporting and the underlying processes.
  • Supports the tax compliance activities of the University by researching and summarizing regulatory requirements, liaising with stakeholders to determine actions required, and resolving process issues.
  • Supports the service delivery of the Controller's Office by responding to or redirecting campus inquiries on financial transaction matters.
  • Participates in the ongoing continuous improvement efforts within the Financial Services section by identifying opportunities for process streamlining and automation and supporting process redevelopment through sharing of subject matter expertise.
  • Direct management and oversight of clerical and co-op student staff.

    The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

    Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field such as commerce or business administration preferably with concentration in accounting plus at least five years' relevant work experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Completion of the Canadian CPA designation.
  • Advanced understanding of accounting theory, principles, and standards and the ability to interpret and apply such to develop solutions.
  • Demonstrated expertise identifying and implementing process improvements within a complex organization. Comfort with documenting processes and knowledge sharing through meetings and presentations.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems processing large volumes of data and competency in the Microsoft Office Suite with exceptional Excel abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and confidential matters with excellent judgment, discretion, and tact, and the ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions.

  • Prior experience in a post-secondary, public sector, or large non-profit environment.
