Family Social Worker
The African Canadian Christian Network (ACCN) Nurturing Promise, Harvesting Potential

(NPHP - Program) is an evidence-based intervention program for 400 African Canadian students ages 14-19 years old. The project works to support these youth who face multiple risk factors with positive life alternatives in order to achieve academic success.

NPHP adopts an African-centered approach to engage and support African Canadian youth and is designed to increase their academic achievement, positively influence attitudes toward school, reduce truancy, create opportunities for entrance into post
- secondary education, increase prospects for employment, and teach financial literacy.

The project supports will also strengthen family bonds and improve rapport with teachers.

The project will implement four key components: academic supports, life skills programming, mentorship and family supports.

NPHP will be offered to Black youth living within the Toronto and the Greater Toronto Areas of Peel and Durham over a 52-month period.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
Full-time, Contract

January 3, 2023 (or sooner)


SALARY:
Starting $55,000.00

***The Family Social Worker works on a multi-disciplinary team to provide support to family members of ACCN youth to help them better navigate the school system. The FSW hosts training workshops and engages in one and one counselling sessions.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The primary function of the Family Social Worker is to assist families to cope or alleviate circumstances, which adversely affect their child's ability to benefit from the educational process.
  • To provide family or group counselling on a shortterm basis
  • To respond to crisis situations.
  • To consult with personnel regarding social work/mental health assessments, recommendations and/or interventions.
  • To empower families to access and effectively use community resources.
  • To make referrals to and act as a liaison with appropriate outside agencies.
  • To provide family social work assessments as they relate to educational, emotional, social or behavioural issues.
  • To deliver workshops and in service programs to students, school personnel and families
  • To document all interventions and prepare professional reports as required.
  • To ensure that students and their families are provided culturally sensitive services that enhance students' learning experiences.
  • To provide case management support to families
  • To carry out such duties as may, from time to time, be assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Social Worker Degree from an accredited university and/or three (3) years of experience working with and supporting families.
  • Registered and in good standing or eligible for registration with OCSWSSW
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with multiple disciplines.
  • Excellent youth/family engagement and rapport building skills with an understanding of clientcentred care.
  • Ability to foster and maintain excellent working relationships with community partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify a broad range of psychosocial issues that impact student achievement and proven ability to develop effective intervention plans to address the same.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide short term evidencebased interventions with children, youth, families and groups within a school setting.
  • Excellent crisis intervention skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management and oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the barriers and challenges faced by youth and families in culturally diverse, newcomer, and/or lowincome communities is a definite asset.
  • Must have valid driver's license/insurance and consistent use of a vehicle.
  • Criminal Background Check suitable to the Board is a condition of employment.
