Job Summary

  • Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) facilitates continuous improvement in environmental, health and safety management through engagement, consultation and collaboration with all members of the Dalhousie University community. Reporting to the Industrial Safety Manager, the EH&S Specialist (Industrial) makes independent decisions that support the development and implementation of strategic direction, compliance objectives, and EH&S targets that help lead the institutionalization of standards/procedures/processes, and improves institutional safety culture. Interprets provincial and federal occupational safety legislation, comprehends complex industry standards, codes and other external safety guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the design, development and implementation of portions of the industrial safety program to ensure facilities, laboratories, construction projects/sites, internal trades, and university procedures and protocols meet or exceed regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Develop processes for and oversee effective inspections and audits of buildings and equipment throughout the university to provide advice and promote compliance with regulations such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Technical Safety Act, various ASHRAE/ANSI/CSA Standards, Dalhousie policy, and industry best practice to responsible parties (e.g., directors, managers, supervisors, faculty, staff, and students).
  • Lead the development/design of technical content for various EH&S courses (both inperson and virtual), available for delivery to personnel across all levels of Dalhousie, as well as to external parties.
  • Support other programs within the EH&S Office, including biosafety, chemical safety, farm safety, nuclear safety, and fire & life safety. Create and maintain policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety. Represent the EH&S Office on local safety committees, and respond to safety incidents as required.

Note

  • The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of inperson work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field with a minimum of two (2) years of related work experience (or equivalent combination of training or experience),
  • Must have excellent communication (oral and written), and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently on multiple projects in a fastpaced, confidential work environment with strong attention to detail, and problemsolving and organizational skills_._
  • Experience in safety requirements relating to institutional, industrial, manufacturing, or construction settings, such as: confined space, working at heights, lockout/tagout, industrial (mobile) equipment, and electrical safety.

Assets

  • A valid driver's license.
  • Experience developing and delivering training.
