We are an 8-acre farm in the heart of the Jane and Finch neighbourhood in Toronto. We are a not-for-profit organization and leader in Toronto's dynamic urban agriculture and community food sector.

At Black Creek Community Farm, we serve and enrich our community through a thriving farm, healthy food, and hands-on training and learning experiences.

Our focus is to inspire the next generation by providing leadership in food justice and supporting diverse natural and social ecosystems.

Main Tasks

The BCCF Farm Education Coordinator will develop, facilitate, and coordinate intergenerational educational programming for all ages that is rooted in food justice.

Educational programming will include experiential learning activities at our farm site, travelling curriculum programming offered off site, and online programming.


Responsibilities:

Programming

  • Develop and implement a landbased education curriculum for all ages that is rooted in food justice, urban agriculture, environmental stewardship, STEM topics, food preservation, and cooking programming
  • Work collaboratively with other BCCF staff to develop, coordinate, and faciliate field trips, workshops and events in person, on and off site, and/or virtually including planning, staffing and materials for each, as needed
Supervision

  • Train, schedule and supervise staff (including Farm Eductators), as well as placement students/interns and volunteers, in all relevant aspects of Farm Education programming
Maintenance

  • Engage program participants in the design, development and maintenance of the teaching gardens and outdoor classroom spaces
  • Create seasonal, weekly, and daily "to do" task lists for the Farm Education team to accomplish
Administration

  • With the Programs Manager, develop an annual work plan that includes workshops, events, community outreach and communications strategies, and staffing
  • Work with BCCF Program Manager to establish project budgets, and track and adjust income and expenses
  • Purchase program materials and supplies, track expenses and receipts, and support project bookkeeping
Evaluation and Reporting

  • Design and oversee the implementation of program evaluation tools
  • Track program metrics and deliverables in Farm Education Program Log/Tracking document
  • Collaborate with Farm Education staff to prepare monthly program updates, the annual report, and other fundingrelated progress reports
Outreach

  • Design and conduct outreach activities to register participants, including creating promotional materials, canvassing, flyering, partnering with local schools and community organizations, and tabling at community events to engage community residents
  • Provide content and media for communication to be shared regarding upcoming Farm Education events and programs, through weekly social media posts (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and monthly enewsletters; update website as needed
General

  • Adhere to Foodshare and BCCF's policies and health and safety procedures
  • Attend BCCF staff meetings and staff trainings, schedule team meetings and checkins
  • Participate in farmwide initiatives and events
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:


  • Minimum 2+ years experience running educational programs for children, youth, and adults in an outdoor setting
  • Minimum 2+ year experience designing and adapting lesson plans, and facilitating workshops to serve the needs of various age groups and are culturally relevant
  • Minimum 1+ year of vegetable gardening experience with knowledge of organic growing practices (pest, fertility and weed management, and seed starting)
  • Knowledge of vermicomposting and/or beekeeping an asset
  • Minimum 1+ year experience supervising other staff and volunteers
  • Minimum 1+ year experience conducting outreach in community (registering participants, creating promotional materials, canvassing, flyering, tabling at community events)
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of food justice and antioppression
  • An understanding of issues affecting the diverse populations of the Jane-Finch area including general issues affecting lowincome communities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills for diverse groups with the ability to think quickly and creatively problemsolve during workshops, tours, or group activities
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with people of different ages,genders, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and individuals who experience marginalization
  • Demonstrated experience managing administrative and financial activities associated with programming including spreadsheetbased planning tools and recordkeeping systems
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities, follow through, and meet deadlines
  • Digital literacy and familiarity with tools such as G-Suite (Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides, Calendar, Gmail), so
