    Overview

    St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) is seeking an Accessibility Resource Advisor to join the Health, Counselling, and Accessible Learning Department. Reporting to the Manager of the Tramble Centre for Accessible Learning (TCAL), the successful candidate will play a critical role in orienting students to the Centre for Accessible Learning. The successful candidate will have ongoing contact with students as well as various provincial grant funding agencies and post- secondary accessibility service departments.

    Summary of Responsibilities

    • Assess students' eligibility to apply for external disability-related grant funding, and if eligible, assist with the application process.
    • In conjunction with the Tramble Centre team, assist students with disabilities in their adjustment to post- secondary education, recognizing barrier(s) and supporting them in development of self-advocacy skills.
    • Train students with disabilities and other service providers in applicable assistive technology programs.
    • Maintain ongoing contact with students to monitor and support them in accessing other on-campus and community-based services and resources.
    • Work with potential new students of the program to support their upcoming transition to post-secondary education.
    • Liaise with and support students through mediation with service providers of assistive technology, the Nova Scotia Department of Advanced Education, post-secondary disability support personnel, as well as StFX community members.
    • Advance awareness about disability issues in post-secondary education at the campus level and in the community through the maintenance of professional liaisons.

    Qualifications/Skills:

    • Bachelor of Education degree, or an undergraduate degree in a related field, plus a minimum of two years relevant experience in a post-secondary educational setting.
    • Proficiency in the forms of technology utilized by students who work with the Tramble Centre, as well as with software used to manage the Tramble Centre caseload.
    • Work experience and educational background in the areas of disability, accessibility, and equity are required.
    • Superior communication and organization skills.
    • Relevant experience demonstrating proficiency as a collaborative team member who can also work independently, multi-task and prioritize daily workload.

    The Health and Counselling Centre provides primary health care to StFX students with a collaborative care team that includes physicians, nurses, and mental health professionals. The Tramble Centre for Accessible Learning is an academic program of support for students with diagnosed and documented permanent disabilities. Tramble Centre Staff work with students to put in place recommended accommodations that will help students to succeed at StFX.
