Description

For 50 years, Nellie's has provided shelter and support for marginalized women and their children in the Greater Toronto Area.

We operate programs and services for women and their children who had or are experiencing violence, poverty, and homelessness.

Nellie's works to lessen homelessness for women and their children, whether the cause is family violence, mental health, or any other reason that results in dealing with the impact of trauma.


Our core operations involve our 38-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are homeless or escaping violent situations.

In addition to our shelter, Nellie's operates Community Support and Outreach programs that provide aftercare support and follow-up services to women and their children after they leave the shelter, as well as transitional housing support for women and gender-diverse people living in the community who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Nellie's is looking to hire a Wellness Coordinator to support the Substance Use and Addiction Supervisor. This is a contract position from January 2024 until March 2025.

The primary function of this position is to develop overall wellness programming for women who choose to use substances within the 14 VAW shelters across the GTA.

Most of this work will be curating wellness-related programs and services and providing support for the SUAP initiatives.

The SUAP Wellness Coordinator will also work with a peer-led focus group of women fleeing domestic violence and women who choose to use substances.

Job Summary/Description

  • Support women in VAW shelters/programs that use substances with their health and wellness needs.
  • Providing appropriate referrals as needed for more holistic health and wellness.
  • Facilitating focus groups to identify needed programs and services.
  • Provide a safe space for open and honest health and wellness discussion from a harm reduction standpoint.
  • Providing sound information to clients on safe use practices.
  • Directing clientcentered care, while using being innovative Documentation
  • Maintain all records required by funders: Client lists and files, program files.
  • Collect relevant data to support and meet program goals.
  • Support the Substance Use and Addictions Supervisor in tracking and analyzing data for reporting purposes.
  • Assist Individuals in Establishing a Community Support Network
  • Provide information about community support (e.g., identification, income support, taxes, etc.)
  • Support with connection to services and support with outside agencies.
  • Support the Substance Use and Addictions Supervisor to outreach and network with organizations in the community. Community Education
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, programming and other wellness initiatives for individuals who use substances.
  • Attend webinars, training and meetings about substance use, addiction, and wellness. Team Building
  • Contribute to the team building process.
  • Participate in meetings with Substance Use and Addictions Supervisor to review programming initiatives.
  • Consult and coordinate with the Substance Use and Addictions team appropriately.
  • Work independently and as part of a larger team to support the client's needs.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to AR/AO
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, social work, counselling).
  • Fluency in English is essential (oral and written), second language is an asset.
  • Understanding of the importance of working from a harm reduction perspective
  • Strong understanding of substance use and addiction and the recovery process.
  • Administrative and organizational skills, as well as familiarity with MS Office
  • Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills. Active listening skills and empathy skills
  • Knowledge of local resources and support services.
  • Valid CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality and ethical standards in addiction treatment.

Pay:
$24/hour
