    Position Overview

    The Manager, Small Commercial Underwriting leads a group of underwriting professionals, ensuring adjudication of mortgage applications are in accordance with the 5 C's (Capacity, Capital, Collateral, Character, Conditions). Assessing risk and ensuring all applications adhere to both quality and service standards remain the overarching focus for this role through coaching and mentoring their respective team.

    Position Responsibilities

    Risk and Compliance (40%)

  • Review, analyze and verify Small Commercial mortgage applications for completeness, accuracy, suitability and risk to ensure compliance with all aspects of Home Trust Company's underwriting policies, procedures and guidelines per delegated authority matrices
  • Adhere to applicable compliance obligations including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and internal Anti-Fraud Policy requirements
  • File Unusual Transaction Reports as applicable to fulfil individual employee obligations to detect and deter financial crimes activity. Maintain consistent, objective and sound risk assessments in a high volume, service-oriented environment
  • Leadership (40%)

  • Lead by example and provide daily feedback and coaching to team members
  • Foster a team environment focused on achieving all departmental objectives and goals in support of the business plan
  • Monitor productivity, quality and workflow to ensure optimal team efficiency and quality in adjudicating prospect applications
  • File Management (10%)

  • Take a hands-on leadership approach to make prudent credit decisions on complex mortgage files
  • Review and approve loan terms and pricing according to originations' recommendation to meet the interests of the client and Home Trust's risk tolerance
  • Prepare quality files and recommend revisions as required
  • Act as a point of escalation for our broker partners to ensure issues are managed in an efficient and appropriate manner
  • Communication (10%)

  • Adhere to defined Service Level Agreement in acknowledging applications and following up on additional required information
  • Work effectively with all internal and external business partners to maximize effectiveness and achieve excellence
  • Remain current on latest industry developments and market trends to secure competitive advantage
  • Formal Education

  • Bachelor's degree required in related area
  • Related Experience

    Formal Education:

    • University degree in related area or discipline

    • Additional relevant accreditation(s), certification(s) are assets

    Related Experience:

    • 3-5 years (5+ years for Senior) leading a team within mortgage lending

    • In depth understanding of residential mortgage products

    • Significant experience in reviewing commercial mortgages
