Information & Instructional Technology Services (IITS) provides the technological vision and leadership for the development and implementation of information systems, processes, and associated technology to support the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus' academic mission and administrative operation.

Your opportunity:


The individual will provide consultation with researchers to help determine the most optimal solutions to satisfy all aspects of their computing and storage needs, while ensuring such solutions also meet the needs of the campus as a whole and the requirements of the existing IT infrastructure.


The incumbent is the main campus resource responsible for the management of faculty SLA and physical systems and storage and acts as the highest-level support for research systems and storage related issues.


In collaboration with I+TS and IITS Systems staff the incumbent will participate in cloud initiatives such as Azure, and be directly responsible for deployment of a variety of cloud compute and storage solutions.


In addition, the incumbent is directly responsible for managing the update cycle of a variety of core and SLA Linux virtual servers with recommended and security upgrades and performing timely backups of various storage systems.


They maintain system documentation and creates knowledge base articles to be used by lower level support personnel, and advises on the applicability of new technologies that may aid in increasing the productivity and efficiency of campus computing services and resources.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Liaising with researchers to determine computational needs
  • Analyzing, troubleshooting and testing highly complex systems
  • Conducting preventative maintenance on computing systems and troubleshooting complex computer system problems
  • Serving as a technical resource on hardware and software related issues
  • Checking that security authorization meets University guidelines and project requirements and Conducting Threat Risk Assessment (TRA) and Privacy Risk Assessment (PRA)
  • Creating complex and technical documentation and user support guides

Essential Qualifications:


  • A Bachelor's degree in the computer sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a computing focused research environment using a variety of computer systems, hardware, and analysis tools
  • Strong skills as a Linux systems administrator; familiarity with hardware and storage; broad understanding of computer networking and firewalls.
  • Strong knowledge of various scripting and programming languages, eg python, bash, etc.
  • Familiarity with data security concepts and standards.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and to learn on the job in a fastpaced environment.
  • Ability to multitask, and effectively prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
