Major Responsibilities:


  • Operates equipment and perform general labouring duties related to the development and maintenance of parks, parkland facilities and amenities.
  • Operates heavy motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner to construct and maintain city property including, Parks and Public Lands, Street features, Agricultural, Horticultural, Water infrastructure, playgrounds, commemorative trees and benches, beaches, ravines, etc.
  • Operates powered vehicles and equipment including track mounted excavators, loaders and bulldozers, rubber tired loaders and back hoe loaders, tandem dump trucks in combination with heavy equipment float, roll off trucks, truck mounted articulated cranes, etc.
  • Loads, unloads and transports materials/equipment/vehicles/supplies and other types of loads using chains and slings to position items and ratcheting straps to properly secure loads on flat beds and/or open vehicles.
  • Installs or assists in installing attachments such as back hoe buckets, compactors, lifting forks, hydraulic augers.
  • May be required to interpret and modify plans and drawings.
  • Directs staff in areas of grading and drainage, landscaping, excavation, retaining walls and playground construction.
  • Must be familiar with trenching and shoring and support systems as defined by the OH&SA.
  • Liaises with utility companies.
  • Performs general maintenance and construction activities in parks, arenas, pools when not operating vehicles and/or equipment
  • Maintains vehicles in clean and tidy condition and makes daily inspection and reports defects, etc.
  • May provide work direction and training to other staff. Demonstrates safe working procedures to staff in the vicinity of heavy equipment. Assists workers in various functions
  • Completes written reports as required

Key Qualifications:


  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "A" Driver's License (with "Z" endorsement), and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment as outlined in the responsibilities such as rubber tired front end loader, backhoe, track mounted excavators, truck mounted articulated cranes.
  • Experience in general maintenance and construction practices as it relates to Parks assets.

You must also have:


  • Ability to maintain accurate records and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Must be physically capable of performing the required duties and be able to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public
  • Must be available to work weekends /overtime as required
