Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Facilities Services and the Director of Public Safety, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring a safe, sustainable, clean and orderly campus environment is maintained within the function of the position.

This position is a shared position between the Facilities Services and Public Safety.


The position involves regular maintenance and minor repair duties on campus and college assets including structures, facilities, parking, roadways, and grounds including associated equipment and furnishings.


Primary role will be as a grounds and parking lot maintenance/caretaker, however the department works as a team regular types of building maintenance tasks may be required.

Mobile equipment and outdoor hand operated tools used to care for the grounds will be utilized daily.


Knowledge of horticultural, pruning & tree trimming, and ground maintenance is key to this role including of rain gardens and low impact development areas.


The incumbent will be working with peers and management in a team environment as well as performing duties independently to meet position requirements and to keep campus in exemplary condition.

Performs all tasks observant that work is being done in a public setting.

The safety of students, staff and public in the front of mind; addressing issues when observed, pausing work, installing barriers, signage, and or hazard cones to prevent safety incidents with those in the vicinity of work areas.


It is the responsibility of the incumbent to provide excellent customer service during the execution of all tasks and duties.

Courteous communication and active listening skills are essential for dealing with students, staff, and the public.


The incumbent requires good judgement and the ability to take initiative to maintain and ensure the buildings, interior and exterior assets, campus grounds, parking, roadways, sidewalks and building entries/exits are kept safe, accessible, well maintained, clean and orderly appearance.


The incumbent provides safety, operational and basic maintenance training on all equipment related to this position to new facilities employees as required.

Monitors progress and supports department summer students in the completion the summer work plans.


The incumbent will contribute to and implement seasonal department work plans and coordinates work with student employees to accomplish tasks.


The incumbent will utilize the computer maintenance system daily to develop weekly work plans and track work completed through reviewing task lists, upcoming preventative maintenance, events, and work orders.

Coordinating and communicating with the office and maintenance staff regularly to ensure work is completed correctly, efficiently, and effectively.


Due to the operational nature of the College priorities and activities may be interrupted or adjusted to operational requirements or issues arising so flexibility and adaptability is necessary in this position.

Maintain an organized, clean and safe jobsite, garage, workshop, tools and equipment on a daily basis.


The incumbent may also be assigned other duties related to department services as assigned by the Facilities Services or Public Safety Departments.

Type of Experience


The incumbent must have a vast knowledge in a variety of areas pertaining to landscaping, horticulture, grounds operations and the general maintenance.


The incumbent is expected to be able to evaluate and place in priority work that has to be completed, ensuring safety first and making the most efficient use of time and resources.

Basic knowledge of small engine maintenance required.

Moderate computer literacy is required as well.

Operation of mobile equipment

Experience with sustainable ground maintenance practices is considered an asset
