As a key position within the Business & Major Events team, the Manager, Major Events & Sport contributes to the overall organizational mission and vision by bringing excellence to the critical field of sport event sales.


Reporting to the Assistant Director, Major Events & Sport, the Manager, Major Events & Sport, will lead the team's efforts to attract major sporting events to Ottawa and to foster and build relationships with relevant stakeholders.

The position also helps the team in its overall efforts to further drive the performance of the Business & Major Events team, and to achieve and exceed defined sales targets.


As a key leader and decision-maker on the Business & Major Events team, the Manager, Major Events & Sport is expected to think and act independently, and to possess a high degree of leadership capability.

Primary Areas of Responsibility

  • Assist supervisor (or other senior leader as directed) in the development and execution of projects and organizational initiatives as required and directed.
  • Participate as a key member of the Business & Major Events team, helping to define and refine the team's strategic goals, operational priorities, and longterm vision.
  • Work collaboratively and in partnership with key members of the Ottawa Tourism team
  • Work collaboratively and in partnership with key external stakeholders; manage stakeholder relations to achieve maximum impact and success.
  • Identify, assess, facilitate, and coordinate sport sales opportunities that will serve to achieve sales goals and overall organizational goals.
  • Build and maintain awareness of available funding support opportunities for major signature events.
  • Liaise with event rights holders and producers to facilitate programming and event coordination among community partners, including municipal, provincial, and federal government agencies.
  • Assess the viability of business plans, with particular attention to funding models, management options, timelines, roles and responsibilities, and other relevant issues.
  • Act as an exemplary ambassador for Ottawa Tourism at all external events, as directed and required.
  • Build brand awareness, identify accounts with opportunities for our members, document and track results.
  • Generate leads, close business and prepare customized bid proposals and conduct bid presentations.
  • Manage assignments as outlined in our annual sales and marketing plan and oversee associated budgets.
  • Develop and lead Ottawa Tourism's relationship with sport industry experts and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Plan & host client site inspections and familiarization tours.
  • Mentor and coach junior colleagues, where appropriate and applicable.

Qualifications & Required Competencies

  • Postsecondary education, ideally in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum 35 years' experience in businesstobusiness sales (hospitality and/or meetings industry preferred).
  • Proven sales productivity record and strong customer service focus.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills preparing presentations and reports.
  • Proficiency in all aspects of Microsoft Office software.
  • Highly developed communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, multitask and meet sales targets.
  • Some experience in and exposure to leadership and employee development; interest in and willingness to develop these areas and to mentor and coach more junior colleagues.
  • Available and eligible for travel to meet with current and potential customers and attend industry related
