The main role of the Student Rights Specialist is to assist in resolving issues related to student behavior, complaints, conflict management, and Human Rights following College policies. They also take part in educational activities to promote student development and reduce complaints and policy violations.
Dealing with visible and sensitive issues, the Specialist aims to balance community safety with student growth and learning. Ensuring College risk mitigation, management, and prevention is a critical part of the role. To achieve this, they collaborate closely with various College teams such as Safety & Security, CARE team, Human Resources, Residence, and academic leadership.
The Specialist, a promoter of equity, diversity, and inclusion, possesses strong intercultural skills, offering sensitive and professional support to a diverse student body.
Responsibilities:
Policy Processes
- Supports the early resolution of student behavioral issues, complaints, disputes, academic appeals, and Human Rights queries
- Provides various dispute resolution services to address student issues, including negotiation, mediation, and conflict coaching
- Investigates and documents all student incidents and ensures all responsibilities are fulfilled during the investigation
- Gives recommendations to the Dean of Students regarding disciplinary measures
- Identifies mental health and behavioral factors affecting student issues
- Conducts interviews with involved stakeholders
- Guides students and staff on policies and procedures
- Assists with referrals and options for students
- Applies resolution techniques to support personal and community development
- Promotes fairness and equity using an anti-oppression lens
- Supports the College's human rights and discrimination process
- Refers students to appropriate campus services
- Collaborates to identify and support at-risk students
Education & Prevention Activities
- Ensures community knowledge through workshops and presentations
- Supports satellite campuses in student rights activities
- Maintains knowledge of conduct policies
General Administration
- Develops student letters and monitors behavior contracts
- Maintains confidential records with legal standards
- Communicates critical issues and policy changes
- Analyzes incident data for educational support
