Position Purpose and Summary

Manages the physical plant and inventory of the chemistry labs; keeps lab equipment repaired and maintained; co-ordinates and supervises all student staff; ensures all required safety procedures are consistently met.


Key Areas of Accountability*- Technical - Responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing instruments and other lab equipment; develops and tests new experiments in consultation with faculty; regularly updates all lab experiments in conjunction with TA's.

Prepares and prints all lab manuals ensuring that they are available at the appropriate time. Technically proficient with Windows, MS Office and scientific software and hardware.

  • Supervision
  • Responsible for cooperating with faculty in: establishing and enforcing protocol for the use of all Chemistry laboratory facilities; Hires, trains and supervises TA's and LA's. In coordination with the Dean of FNAS (Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences) hires, trains and supervises staff for the Summer Work Program. Assists in training and supervision of RA's and markers.


  • Instruction

  • Responsible for coordinating all Chemistry laboratory activities; instructs students with regard to technique and instrumentation as well as faculty, staff and students in laboratory safety; substitutes for faculty instructors in emergencies. Assists dept. chair in scheduling lab sections; ensures an appropriate distribution of students in lab sections; schedules TA's. Keeps detailed record of student lab grades in archives.


  • Inventory Management

  • Responsible for maintaining an inventory (approx. $2M value) of all equipment and supplies to ensure that an adequate facility is available to perform all lab functions. Procures all chemicals and supplies; works in conjunction with faculty to purchase major equipment.


  • Budget Management

  • Responsible for providing input to and assisting in the preparation of the annual capital and operating budgets; approves and monitors expenditures advising department of anticipated overages.


  • Facilities

  • Responsible for consulting with appropriate authority in the design and modification of laboratory facilities as departmental expansion proceeds.


  • External Customer Relations

  • Responsible for coordinating and overseeing laboratory usage by external customers (industrial and academic).


  • Professional Development

  • Responsible for attending workshops / seminars and reviewing literature, on advances in techniques and technologies in the Chemistry field and communicates findings to faculty. Maintain Emergency First Aid certification.
  • Responsible for acting in a manner that exemplifies Jesus Christ in all on and off campus contacts thereby living out the mission of the university and displaying a servant leadership attitude and practice.

  • Superior interpersonal skills with a wide range of students, staff and faculty. Skilled in the handling and resolution of conflict. Skilled in planning work to meet deadlines efficiently and effectively.
  • Knowledge and use of Spectroscopy: UV / Vis, AAS, FTIR, NMR, Fluorometry

Standards & Requirements*Education: B.Sc. in chemistry required. Emergency First Aid required.
Experience: 1-2 years previous experience required in Lab. preparation and development, operation of advanced analytical equipment and chemical inventory control
