Financial Analyst, Full-Time, (Edmonton, AB)

Role Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Financial Reporting Analyst in our Edmonton office.

Reporting to the Divisional Controller, you will play a key role by contributing to achieving the goals of the department and division.

In addition to day-to-day data entry support and monthly journal entries, this position will be responsible for account analysis and reconciliation, preparation and distribution of daily/weekly/monthly management reports while ensuring accuracy and consistency as well as making recommendations for improvement in financial reporting.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Postsecondary education in Accounting.
  • Accounting Designation preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • 35+ years of related operational experience.
  • Insurance industry experience is an asset.
  • Your track record of experience providing smart, timely reporting to senior management
  • Your written communication ability
  • Great Plains or other related ERP experience is an asset
Competencies

  • Technical accounting skills.
  • Excel, Accounting Software, Email and Reporting tools intermediate to expert level.
  • Proven ability to analyze data at a strategic level and to provide recommendations for strategic level actions and/or solutions
  • Knowledge of databases and ability to mine, build analytical models, and analyze data
  • Familiarity with Power BI reporting tool a plus
  • Detail oriented but with the ability to review information at a strategic level.
  • Adaptable and willing to lead change productively
  • Demonstrated professionalism and strong work ethic
  • Demonstrated ability to provide accurate information and problem solving services for the customers while taking ownership of problem solving and decisions where appropriate.

Responsibilities:

Strategy, Plans, Budget (25% Time Allocation)

  • Annual budget and monthly forecasting process
  • Acts as a signing authority on corporate bank accounts
  • Lead / participate in corporate projects including process improvement projects, software upgrades etc.
  • Ensuring that the decision makers in the firm understand the financial implications of the missions and direction they set for their division. Specifically ensure that business plans for both existing initiatives and new initiatives meet minimum ROI expectations.
People & Processes (20% Time Allocation)

  • Coaches, mentors employees, provides training and feedback as required.
  • Regular performance feedback and recommendation for corrective activities as required.
  • Lead and champion change
  • Ensure processes are reviewed. Opportunities for improvement identified and put forth as recommendations to your Divisional Controller
  • Participate in rollout of new processes and protocols. and clearly documented/communicated to staff
Accounting (55% Time Allocation)

  • Assist in providing accounting analysis to support management in strategic decision making using initiative and senior level experience to target appropriate areas for review and redress
  • Completes commission calculations bimonthly
  • Complete accurate monthend journal entries
  • Complete general account reconciliations
  • Publish and distribute financial information within Corporate timelines
  • Prepare and distribute daily/weekly/monthly management report(s)
  • Responsible for month end processing and cutoff activities
  • OLAP cube data maintenance
  • Management Reporter/Adaptive security maintenance
  • Assist in managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data for applicable business divisions
  • Assist with statistical analysis, period variance analysis and budget variance analysis
  • Assist with preparation of monthly and yearend financial statements
  • Assist with preparation of budgets and forecasts
  • Assist with preparation for yearend audit
  • Other project work as assigned
  • Other duties as required.
